It was so great to see Laura again at the Hamilton Donor Centre while she made her 20th donation. It was also awesome to see Laura's 'support crew' keeping her company while on their school holiday break. The school holidays have a massive impact on our ability to reach our weekly collection goals. If you are available next week to help us, we would really appreciate your support.

It was great to see Phoenix yesterday, who came into the Hamilton Donor Centre during a study break to make his 5th donation. His combination of whole blood and plasma donations could potentially help up to 11 people in need.
If you're 16 or older, or know a young person who might be interested in joining our life-saving blood donation team, encourage them to take our Eligibility Quiz:

Due to increased demand, we’d love to see more O negative whole blood donors at our Hamilton Donor Centre. If you're feeling well, eligible, and have some spare time over the next couple of weeks, we would greatly appreciate your support.

Today we celebrate International Donor Recruitment Professionals Day!
The Waikato team works tirelessly to recruit, educate, and retain donors—ensuring a steady supply of vital donations that save lives.

Our team serves as a crucial link between our organization and external stakeholders, including blood drive host venues, community groups, and corporate partners. They develop and implement strategies to attract new donors through community outreach, partnerships with local businesses, tertiary institutions and schools, direct engagement, and digital marketing campaigns.

Based in Hamilton, the team organizes and promotes mobile blood drives across the wider Waikato region, including Pukekohe, the Coromandel Peninsula, Napier & Hastings, New Plymouth & the wider Taranaki region, Gisborne, Taupō, Whanganui, and Marton.

This is just a snapshot of the incredible work this team does—and believe me, there’s so much more!

A big thank you and heartfelt appreciation to this team and to donor recruiters across the country.

🩸Apheresis Awareness Day 2025🩸
Included in our amazing Collections team is a dedicated group of Therapeutic Apheresis nurses who share a 24/7 on call roster. They work along side our colleagues at Te Whatu Ora to deliver Therapeutic Plasma Exchange, stem cell harvests and white cell depletion for patients in need. These patients are sometimes acutely unwell, and our team will carry out these procedures at their bedside. This could be in a medical ward, HDU (High Dependency Unit) or ICU (Intensive Care Unit).

🩸Apheresis Awareness Day 2025🩸
Apheresis is a process where a donor’s blood is passed through an apheresis machine to collect specific components, such as plasma (plasmapheresis) or platelets (plateletpheresis).
These products from the donors are then transfused to patients who need them. During the apheresis process, the red blood cells are returned to the donor.
The apheresis machine has a separation device that spins to separate the plasma/platelets from the red blood cells.
Medical Uses
Apheresis is used for therapeutic purposes, including treatment of:
• Blood cancers
• Autoimmune disorders
• Neurological conditions
• Hyperviscosity syndromes and severe clotting disorders

Thank you to everyone that came into the Hamilton Donor Centre last week to donate whole blood and plasma. It was great to exceed our whole blood collection requirement again, but we were a bit short of the plasma goal. If you, a friend, work mate or family member are available and eligible to visit us this week, we would love to see you.

Have an awesome Monday. 😀

What’s Your Why? Nikki and Brenda’s Story

This is Brenda. She recently made her first plasma donation at the Hamilton Donor Centre—an act of love and remembrance for her amazing daughter, Nikki.
Brenda began donating blood to honour Nikki’s incredible strength and spirit. A few years ago, Nikki faced an unimaginable challenge. At just 30 weeks pregnant, she went in for a routine check-up and was suddenly diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). During her chemotherapy treatment, Nikki had to deliver her baby at 35 weeks—without any pain relief, due to her immune-compromised condition. It was a moment that showed her extraordinary courage.
That baby is now a vibrant, joyful 5-year-old, and an energetic little brother to Nikki’s 8-year-old son.
Nikki underwent a bone marrow transplant and received a substantial amount of whole blood, plasma and platelets. Brenda recalls how these donations gave Nikki the energy to keep going and to fight with everything she had.
Sadly, Nikki passed away in November 2021. Throughout her journey, she never complained, always put others first, and faced her illness with incredible humility.
Brenda is an extremely proud mum and now donates plasma to help others in need. Through her generosity, Brenda is helping others who are fighting their own battles—just like Nikki once did.

Ngā mihi nui, Brenda and Nikki.
Thank you for sharing your story.
