Disability Resource Centre H.B. Trust - DRC Our Vision:
The community is enriched by the participation of people with diverse abilities. Disability Resource Centre (H.B.)

Trust is a Charitable Trust and we offer support to, and promote opportunities for, people with a difference. We work to promote opportunities and facilities for the independence, mobility, and recreation of people with disabilities as well as providing occupational, social and personal opportunities and facilities. We also distribute information and provide assistance to our community and overall foster, encourage and support the work of people with disabilities. Scopze Day Service offers day respite for people with disabilities. It was initially established in 2012 for clients that had been accessing Disability Resource Centre (HB) Trust services for a number of years but then required a more structured, quieter environment with additional support. Network Personnel assists people with a difference to plan their careers, find employment, and provide ongoing in-work support to ensure successful outcomes for their clients. It provides a free supported recruitment service to Employers, which enables businesses to broaden their access to the labour market and thus diversify the workplace. Turning Point is a service assisting people with disabilities to be valued contributors to their community, helping them to have the confidence, skills and support of their families and friends to reach their potential.

Time for another exciting update from our Transition from School to Community service!

Kaipau has been learning how to use the bus, choosing the right one to catch, reading the signs, swiping his Bee Card, and pressing the bell at the right stop.

Catching public transport can be a daunting task, but Kaipau is gaining confidence and valuable life skills that will support his independence beyond his school life.

Awesome stuff, Kaipau!

A spark of creativity and joy in every step.

Art and movement keep Waretini’s days buzzing with energy.
He enjoys different experiences and little adventures by exploring parks and places with friends and support workers.
Flashes of creativity and friendship bring excitement and happiness, as well as spontaneously busting out a tune or two whenever the moment strikes.

We’re back with another Transition from School to Community post!

Only this time we’re showing you what this service looks like in action.

Check out Luis, who’s in his final year and getting supportive work experience at Gun City + Fishing Napier.

He’s been folding clothes, cleaning, tagging products, and organising stock. Luis says, “this is my dream job”.

A big thank you to Jess, Aaron, and the team for supporting Luis and gifting him a fly-fishing rod and cap for his efforts!

Hey community friends! 🤗✨

Did you know we support students through our Transition from School to the Community service?

This service helps young people with disabilities who are funded under the Ongoing Resourcing Scheme (ORS) in their last year of school.
We support them to learn skills for living, working, and joining in community activities. Our Community Support Facilitator works alongside the young person, their family, and school to plan what they want for their future: creating pathways towards independence, inclusion, and connection as they move from school to adulthood.

To support this journey, we’ve created an informative resource to help along the way. It’s designed not only for ORS funded students but also for any young person with a disability, their families, teachers, or natural supports, to ensure that nobody misses out on support they might need.

While attending the centre John can explore, choose and participate in a range of activities he enjoys e.g. Corn hole, assembling LEGO pieces, or taking part in ten pin bowling.

These activities support his physical wellbeing; decision making and give him opportunities to interact with different people from the centre and within the Hastings community

Habitat for Humanity Restore Op shop offers Danielle, Taylor, and Miki the opportunity to volunteer.

They learn how to serve customers, work well within a team, whilst also keeping the shop tidy and welcoming.

Volunteering helps them gain confidence, build connections in the community, and create new friendships along the way.

Aaron attends gym sessions with Adaptive Whakauru Tahi Charitable Trust, where he follows the trainer’s instructions and moves through different exercise stations alongside his peers.

These sessions boost his confidence, improve his fitness and wellbeing, and gives him a chance to connect with others in a supportive, friendly environment.

Emergency preparedness was a recent focus for the service users on learning how to stay ready for any situation.

Everyone listened attentively and explored what items belong in a Go Bag.

Hands-on learning like this helps build confidence and independence, making sure everyone feels equipped for unexpected situations.

Hey, community friends! 🤗✨

Earth Gardens Charitable Trust needs your empty sauce bottles to make the most of their harvest and share tasty goodness all year long.

👉Want to help? See below for more information!

Calling all sauce bottle savers! 🍑🥭

At Earth Gardens we love making the most of our harvest and today it’s plum sauce day! The only hitch… our bottle stash is running low.

If you’ve got clean glass sauce bottles (between 250ml – 500ml) tucked away in a cupboard, we’d love to give them a new life filled with our delicious preserves.

This is all part of our mahi - growing, harvesting, and preserving our produce so nothing goes to waste and our community gets to enjoy the goodness year-round.

👉 If you can help, please comment below or email us at staff@earthgardens.org.nz and we’ll be in touch to arrange getting them to us.

Ngā mihi nui for helping us keep the sauce flowing!
