Heartspace

Heartspace Heartspace is a page where I share what moves me in daily life. I have a wide varity of interests: y I am an essential oil educator.

Heartspace Wellness Solutions has been created by Silke Whittaker, a yoga teacher, sound healer, reiki master, essential oil educator, artist, mama, wife and explorer of the inside and outside world. I used to own a yoga studio in Hastings, New Zealand and loved to share the practice of yoga, sound healing and aromatherapy on a regular basis with my clients. After a sabbatical with my family overseas for 2 years I currently offer one off yoga & sound healing group sessions around Hawke's Bay when time allows. I also love working one on one with clients either for sound healing & reiki sessions or to customise a yoga practice just for you. I am passionate about using doTerra essential oils and love to teach how they can be used to improve your health and home care with these pure gifts from mother nature. doTERRA's sourcing practices and quality are impeccable, which is why I have been working with them for around 6 years now. I am happy to customise one on one sessions, group sessions or make custom blends for clients. You can learn more about Heartspace Yoga & Heartspace Essentials on heartspace.nz. If you have any questions you can contact me on silke@heartspace.nz. I am looking forward to connecting with you.

Would love to hear your thoughts.
How much time do you spend on social media?
How do you limit the time you spend on it?
Do you find it helpful?
Did you notice your attention span declining over the last few years?
How do you resonate with this short form content, e.g. its hard to convey any depth on anything really.

5-10 minute reset

This is another Yin Yoga shape that I love to wind down, rest and relax.

You need 2 yoga blocks if you want to go for the arrangement I show in the video. You could use really big books as an alternative or just have the bolster flat on the floor.

Instead of the bolsters you could use rolled up towels, blankets or folded cushions.

Sit in front of bolster and lower yourself over. Relaxing the face, shoulders, chest and belly. Explore where your arms want to be. I like mine out wide to the side. Maybe even one on the heart, one on the belly or both on the belly.

Experiment with your legs. Maybe another bolster or folded blanket/towel/cushion underneath your knees. Soles of feet together, knees falling out to side or feet apart wider than hips and knees falling together or legs long or fully folded.

If the lower back feels too overextended, perhaps try a folded blanket under the seat or just use a rolled blanket or towel underneath the spine to reduce the stimulation in the spine / back.

I like to feel into a deeper, slower, longer breath with this shape. The heart, chest and belly are nice and open in this shape. I like to bring more depth and length to my breath without it being laboured or forced.

Close your eyes if it feels safe and stay for as long as feels good. 5-10 minute-ish
I like to gently roll to the side when releasing, push the props away and allow the spine and back to ground back into the matt / earth. Maybe even explore hugging the knees in and giving your spine a roll left and right.

Take a moment in stillness at the end and notice what has shifted when you allow yourself short moments of rest during the day.

I hope someone finds this helpful. Feel free to share. x

Trauma is heaviness.
a weight present on my shoulders & in my tummy
weighing down emotions
always present, always there.
Awareness is the first step to shaking it off.

Trauma feels dark.
almost like tinging all the beautiful, colourful experiences of my life with dark ink.
It feels like I have no control of that darkness creeping in, sneakily, slowly, un-noticed at first.
Awareness is the first step to get my colour palette out, put more colour in the black stains, so they start to dilute and actually make nice patterns with my colour.

Trauma feels like tension & clenching in my jaw, neck & shoulders.
Almost like if I let go of the holding, gripping I am going to loose control.
Awareness is the first step in the right direction - realising that control is an illusion.
Realising that I don't have to hold it all together all the time.
allowing myself to take up space, to screw up, to be seen in my full imperfection, allowing balls to fall if there are too many to juggle.
Breathing deep, letting go, softening...

Trauma feels like fear, a fear that penetrates everything.
I can't explain it, it has just always been there.
This fear has made everything just so much harder.
Its annoying presence is unwanted and too often unwarranted,
making something that could just be easy, pleasurable, joyful, light
tinged with worry, heaviness, tension and dark shadow.
Awareness is the first step to recognise this is not entirely mine.
Its partly inherited, partly learned, partly my own.

I am calling in lightness, colourful experiences,
I am calling in ease, inspiration and joy,
I am calling in wisdom, love and softness,
and I am calling in courage, strength and confidence.

I am wrapping myself in a light colourful silk scarf
instead of
a heavy dark blanket.

The end.

I have read twice this morning that this year was the year of the Wood Snake and its a year about shedding skins. This has certainly be true for me.

This year I have been exploring trauma for myself and low and behold I found lasting release in my jaw for the first time in the 21 years I have been aware of it. Not through manual adjustments, massages etc., but through release of trauma from my body.

My jaw is not fixed by any stretch, but its not as clenched and full of tension anymore, thanks to brain spotting, EMDR and talk therapy.

You can read more about my journey with this over on substack

https://open.substack.com/pub/myheartspace/p/trauma-explorations-and-jaw-releases?r=19ob06&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

I will be offering brainspotting next year in my 1:1 offerings alongside sound healing, reiki, aroma theraphy and 1:1 yoga sessions. Please be in touch if you are interested to explore this with me.

10 minute reset - lying twist.

I love this shape and usually stay around 3-5 minutes to each side.

I am demonstrating different versions in this video. Try out which one feels best for you.

I always try to have both shoulders grounded in the floor and only release legs as far as I can maintain the grounding through the shoulders.

Bring in props for the comfort. Focus on slow, deep belly breaths. Exhalations / sighs through the open mouth can feel really soothing.

The breath, body awareness are great anchors if the mind is busy.

One more yoga sessiion with me this week. Saturday, 7.30-8.45 at Hygge cafe in Haumoana under the Olive trees out the back. Weather dependant, but forecast looks good. $15 Koha

Hope you have a good week.

High vibe oils. Let me know asap if you would like any. Making my last order this week for the year.

5 minute reset - miniflow

Standing position - feet hipwidth apart, microbend knees, reach arms up, backbend if you like

Chairpose - lower into imaginary seat, notice where it feels accessible, arms reach up or hands in heartspace

Full forward fold - upper body relaxed, notice where hands want to land, hanging, on legs, hands to elbows, feet hipwidth, microbend knees.

Squat - lower seat down, use blocks under hands if its helpful or reach forwards or prayerhands.

Back to full forward fold and come back to standing

Repeat as often as feels good.

Our Story

Heartspace has been created by Silke Whittaker, a yoga teacher, sound healer, reiki master & essential oil educator, mama, wife, truthteller and explorer of the inside and outside world. I used to own a yoga studio in Hastings, New Zealand and loved to share the practice of yoga, soundhealing and aromatherapy on a regular basis with my clients. Now a new adventure is calling, living on a sailboat with my husband, 2 children and our dog and getting back to basics. I will share my insights and adventures with you and yoga, sound healing, aromatherapy, mindfulness, meditation will still be a big part of my life. I am looking forward to really immersing myself in my own practice, reading, digesting and internalising my insights, writing more, drawing more, spending more time looking into my childrens and husbands eyes and being present for myself and my family. I am also an essential oil educator. I am passionate about my doTerra oils and love to teach how they can be used to improve your home, health and body care with these gifts from nature. I am still sharing the oils from our boat and educate my clients how to use them safely and efficiently, either online or personally if we cross paths.
