Hā Āta Yoga

Hā Āta Yoga Yoga for every body, guided by breath and care. New students are always welcome as each individual body is taken into consideration throughout class.

Hā Āta, translating to "intentional breath," is a Kawhia-based yoga practice that connects mindful movement with the breath. Welcoming intention, each class moves through traditional asanas (poses) and provides space for savasana (final relaxation). The benefits of the practice include increased flexibility, strength, and balance, as well as improved mental clarity, focus, and stress relief.

Kia Ora Kāwhia Yogis!

It’s been a joy to offer Monday night, Hā Āta, yoga classes for the past six months at the Kawhia Community Centre. A big thank you to everyone who has participated and especially Kelz for encouraging me to start sharing under the Hauora Fitness umbrella last July, as I completed my 200hr teaching certification.

I have sad and exciting news to share. Moving forward I am discontinuing the Monday night Hatha Flow series at the Community Centre. Instead, I will be replacing these classes with upcoming 4-8 week series, in multiple styles of yoga. (Yayyy!)

As I am presently completing an additional specialised Yin Yoga teaching certification, I am excited to share classes in several styles of yoga at varying time slots to suit a wider range of schedules and physical abilities.

Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming posts and enrolment opportunities for the new launch of Yin and Hatha series.

If you are a past student who has shared your email and permission to contact you, I will be sure to send you an email directly. Additionally, please feel free to contact me if you have any requests for dates and times for the upcoming series.

Thanks for sharing your practice with me these last six months.

Namaste,
Jenna

Tonight's yoga class will be a one hour, BEGINNER appropriate class, for anyone who is experienced - OR INEXPERIENCED - with yoga. There will be very few standing poses, as this is a GENTLE sequence designed to nourish the body from the inside out, with special focus on turning inwards, and treating yourself with kindness and care.

Come slow down and unwind together with me tonight if you'd like to nourish yourself gently from the inside out :-).

Classes are offered for free with an opportunity for an optional koha if you'd like to contribute towards class expenses. Mats and props are available for use. This class is mostly a seated class, including traditional asanas on the floor. Please bring a towel if you have sensitive knees.

I hope everyone is okay and feeling well since the fall out of this weekend's storm. Yoga is still on tomorrow (Feb 16th) at the Kawhia Hall. Just a head's up the following week (Mar 2nd) we will not be meeting as I will be out of town.

This week's practice is a GENTLE VINYASA sequence. We will be finding connection within our body as we balance our right and left sides, connecting with our breath in this ***gentle*** practice.

As always classes are offered free of charge with optional koha if you would like to contribute towards class expenses. Traditional seated and standing asanas will be included, with modifications for relevant health conditions and injuries.

See ya on the mat!

Come practice "staying present" in this week's Hatha Yoga sequence on Monday 🤲. Despite whatever is happening in our lives or where we find ourselves physically, mentally or emotionally, sometimes the best thing we can do is to "show up" and remain present within ourselves and our life circumstances. This week's practice is an exploration of cultivating this quality of presence.

***All are welcome. Classes are offered free of cost. Kohas are accepted to contribute towards class expenses.***

***Traditional standing and seated asanas (poses) are practiced with modifications offered for injuries and health conditions.***

This week's pose of the week is Half Moon Pose, also known as Ardha Chandrasana.

Much like Warrior III, Half Moon Pose requires core stability and balance to help maintain the pitch of the upper body's tilt forward. However, in Half Moon Pose the hips are open and the chest lifts opens out towards the lifted back leg.

***Practicing Half Moon Pose***
- Ground through your standing leg
- Open your chest out towards the sky
- Keep your shoulders stacked
- Keep your hips stacked
- Draw a line of energy through lifted foot as you kick back

***Modifications***
- If leaning forward feels scary, you can use try using a block to bring the floor closer for your bottom hand
- If you are building up core strength to hold this pose and open the chest, you can also bring the top arm to your hip as you focus on rotating the top shoulder open.

Have you ever tried a supine twist lying on your back? If not get yourself ready for a scrumptious treat!

HOW TO TRY A SUPINE TWIST:
- Lie down flat on your back
- Scooch your hips over a smidge to the right
- Hug your right knee in towards your chest
- Now twist your knee across your body
- Let gravity pull it towards the ground
- Extend your left palm out long away from your body
- Send your gaze towards your open palm

THINGS TO EXPERIMENT WITH:
- Try using a pillow to prop under your knee for additional support
- Want more of a stretch? Straighten your bent knee!
- Make sure to always even out both sides by practicing on the left too :-)
- Always twist right before twisting left to be kind to your digestive track!

Have fun unwinding friends!

In a world where we’re often driven by fast paced productivity, moving from one task to another, we often forget to find a counter balance of rest. Likewise in some seasons, we can find ourselves needing action, movement and stimulation, as we may be stuck in too much stillness. (However, I find the latter to be less common in our modern Western influenced society).

Just as our natural world cycles through light and dark each day and our seasons change from summer to eventual winter, our physical and energetic/ emotional bodies require balance and harmony of productivity, energy and movement as well as stillness, rest and regeneration.

As we are currently experiencing the natural season of summer, I find myself enjoying the long days of light and the inherent energy it brings. However, it’s important for me to remember in this season of activity to also find a counterbalance, allowing my body and my mind to find moments of stillness and recovery.

On an anatomical level, our bodily muscles respond to heat and motion, whereas our connective tissue and joints require a different type of stimulation acquired through slowness and stillness.

This week’s practice will be focussed on cultivating heat through a vinyasa sequence as well as finding a counterbalance of cooling through long relaxed holds in restorative poses, as we contemplate the need for both of these qualities in every aspect of our lives.

See ya on the mat!
