Attending the Manurewa ANZAC dawn ceremony was a quiet but powerful experience. As the first light came through, there was a stillness that made you stop and reflect — not just on the sacrifice of those who served, but on what that sacrifice means for us today.

Standing with our community — kaumātua, families, the youth who came out — you could feel a real sense of unity.

ANZAC Day brings generations together, reminding us that remembrance is something we carry forward, not just look back on.

What stayed with me was how the ANZAC spirit lives on in our communities.

It’s in the way we support each other, stand together, and serve our people every day. The courage and sacrifice we honour didn’t end back then — it continues through how we choose to live now.

The community service afterwards grounded that even more. It was about connection, reflection, and acknowledging each other as a community moving forward together.

Lest we forget.

I appreciated the opportunity to meet with youth in Manurewa alongside Esther. The parents and students displayed remarkable enthusiasm for this program, which offers a distinctive chance to experience culture and sports concurrently.

With ANZAC Day just around the corner, I’ve been reflecting on a special moment here in Manurewa.

At Manurewa Central School, it wasn’t about wreaths — it was about our students laying crosses before the cenotaph. Each one placed carefully, in order of the soldiers who gave their lives. You could feel the meaning in it. Every cross represented a name, a story, a whānau.

For our tamariki, it helped bring the history to life in a real and grounded way.

What stood out most was the respect. The way our young people took their time, understood the moment, and honoured it properly.

That’s Manurewa. That’s how we remember.

Lest we forget.

Proud to support our whānau. Every cheer, every handshake, every smile—this is what makes Manurewa special. Michael Leau...
