🔥🐴 Welcoming the Year of the Fire Horse with a 20% discount* on bodywork! 🐴🔥

If you’ve been feeling a bit of extra spark in the air lately, you’re not imagining it. According to the Chinese zodiac, 2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse—a rare and powerful combination that only comes around every 60 years. Fire Horses are known for their big energy, bold spirit, and unstoppable forward momentum… sound like any horses you know?

To celebrate this fiery, vibrant start to the year, I’m launching a 20% discount offer* on equine bodywork sessions from now until January 19th.

The Fire Horse energy is all about drive and enthusiasm, but with that can come tension, overexertion, and the need for grounding. Bodywork is a beautiful way to help your horse stay balanced—loosening tight muscles, improving circulation, and supporting calm focus so they can channel that Fire Horse spark in the best possible way.

✨ Special offer available until January 19th (T&Cs apply*)
✨ Perfect for performance horses, paddock mates, and everyone in between
✨ Let’s help your horse start the Fire Horse year feeling supple, settled, and relaxed

DM to book or visit https://www.hoofandpaw.co.nz/equine-bodywork. I can’t wait to support your horses as we gallop into this fiery new year together! 🔥🐎

T&Cs
* offer available only until 19/01/26
* travel fees may apply to some locations & will be confirmed at time of booking
* 20% discount on rates as below:
- existing client $80 (normally $100)

🌞 Top 5 Tips for Keeping Your Horse Sound This Summer

Summer is one of the best times to enjoy our horses — long evenings, dry tracks, and more time in the saddle. But it’s also the season when little niggles can turn into bigger problems if we’re not proactive. Here are my top five tips for keeping your horse happy, supple, and sound through the warmer months:

1. Stay Ahead of Hydration & Electrolytes
Heat, humidity, and work can drain your horse faster than you realise. Make salt blocks or loose salt available daily, and consider electrolytes for horses in medium to hard work. Good hydration keeps muscles firing properly and reduces the risk of tying-up or fatigue-related soreness.

2. Manage Hard Ground Impact
NZ summers can mean concrete-hard paddocks and roadsides. Mix up surfaces, slow down hill work, and check hooves regularly. Good farriery and mindful footing choices can spare joints, tendons, and the entire musculoskeletal chain from unnecessary strain.

3. Keep a Consistent Warm-Up & Cool-Down
It’s tempting to hop on and go when the weather’s great, but soft tissues love routine. Start with 10–15 minutes of stretchy walking and finish with the same. You’ll help circulation, encourage better biomechanics, and reduce post-ride stiffness.

4. Watch for Subtle Behaviour Changes
Pinned ears when being brushed, reluctance to bend, shortening stride, or a sudden dislike of girthing can be early whispers of discomfort — not bad manners. Horses speak softly at first. Catching these clues early prevents bigger issues later.

5. Make Body Care Part of Regular Management
Just like conditioning, worming, and dental care, body care works best as a maintenance practice rather than a reaction to a problem. Regular bodywork supports healthy muscle patterns, improves range of motion, aids recovery, and helps spot developing asymmetries before they turn into lameness.

You don’t have to book endless sessions — even learning a few simple release techniques or stretches can make a world of difference. Professional sessions complement your everyday care by ensuring your horse’s body is moving the way nature intended.

⭐️ My service includes recommendations tailored to your horse, which I guide you through at the end of the session, as well as links to guides and videos ⭐️

Summer is for adventures — let’s help our horses feel their best for every ride. If you ever want guidance on recognising tension, improving posture, or tailoring body-care routines for your horse, I’m always happy to chat.

Who's at Equifest this weekend? A beautiful drive up to Taupo yesterday and the opportunity to see some great horse people at work - Russell Higgins and Warwick Schiller below. I had a really interesting chat with Bex Tasker on positive reinforcement/clicker training and she was very generous in staring some tips.

Did anyone else visit? Which sessions were your favourite?

🐴💬 Let’s talk teeth!

Today my horses had their annual dentals. Understanding when your horse last had a dental is one of the first questions I ask during a bodywork session. 🤔 Why is that?

Well, horses with sharp points, uneven wear, or pain in their mouth will start to compensate with their posture — often subtly at first. They might carry themselves crookedly, avoid a contact, or even develop tension through the poll, jaw, neck, shoulders and back. Over time, that imbalance can cause real discomfort throughout the whole body.

That’s why regular dental checks (at least every 12 months - some horses may require more frequent dentals) are so important — not just for eating and bitting comfort, but for the health of their entire musculoskeletal system.

So if your horse is feeling “off” or just not quite right in their work, don’t forget to check in with your equine dentist — it could make all the difference.

About me

Hello! I’m an Equinology® Equine Body Worker (EEBW) and completed my certification with Equinology® Australia (https://www.equinologyanz.com).

How can body work help my horse? If you’ve every had a massage yourself, you’ll probably remember how much easier it was to move your body and how great your muscles felt afterwards. Equine massage therapy has been shown to:

  • improve circulation - massage increases blood flow to the area and increased circulation can help speed recovery of injured muscles and aid mobility

  • increase range of motion - stretches and improving muscle tone can help improve a horse’s range of motion which can allow them to become more effective under saddle
