This week in Hiwa Ako, we have been creating an Anzac Wreath, whilst learning about Anzac Day. Today our Hiwa Ako tamariki went for a hikoi to our local Matamata-Piako Civic and Memorial Centre (located out front of our library).
Here we placed our beautiful wreath, that we have created with great time and care, remembering those who served and died in military operations. Tamariki painted our wreath green, before helping glue on our handprints, painted red to represent individual poppy flowers.
We sat at the memorial, refreshed with a drink, and spoke about Anzac Day. We read the words on the memorial, and tamariki asked questions about Anzac Day. We shared how the memorial was for our brave soldiers who went to war, to protect our country. Our tamariki shared that soldiers went to war to ‘keep our country safe’ which is very true.
Our tamariki were very proud to leave their Anzac wreath for the local community to see. On our way back to Rose and Clive, Amelia W noticed the flags flying down the town centre, that have a poppy on them - great spotting Amelia! Tamariki were excited to see these poppy’s.
