One of my favourite things about late summer is the arrival of luscious, health-giving elderberries. They've seen me through many winters and the pandemic. I don't do anything special with them...just a simple, honey-based syrup to share with friends ❤️

You know it's December in New Zealand when the elderflowers emerge from the vibrant new growth of Sambucus nigra. They have so many uses and apart from in a syrup, my favourite is dried and used in a tea with peppermint to hurry along a cold. I only wish I could beat the blackbirds to the amazing berries that follow!

Sometimes in the seemingly simple is the greatest beauty! The roadsides are covered in these beautiful, perfect little flax flowers. Dreamy 😍

The Hawthorn in the Wairarapa is a sight to behold at the moment! Swathes of beautiful cream and pink flowers across the valley 😍 We'll be in for a great harvest of their health-giving berries come Autumn ❤️

For a moment this morning, the rain stopped and the sun and the bumblebees came out! The foxgloves have taken over my vege garden and I don't have the heart to pull them out (despite having zero use for digitalis!) 😍

I've already posted a Cleavers photo this spring, but this little patch on the side of the road caught my eye because the rays of the setting sun were penetrating the leaves and stems and it just looked so lush 😍

The good thing about all the rain we've been having is that it dampens the fetid smell (am I the only one?!) of the flowering Barberry in the local hedgerows!

I'm not a complete hater...Berberine was a godsend a few years back when my Nutritionist prescribed it for a chronic gut condition! It's just the smell of those flowers 🤢🤢🤢 These ones are just up the road from my home in

I'm not sure who's more excited by the arrival of the Tarata (Lemonwood) flowers, but the bees definitely found them before me! The smell that wafts from these shrubby trees is heavenly and is my absolute favourite. I'd love to sample some Tarata honey one of these days 😍

The local Cleavers is going bananas at the moment! It's popping up on the edges of paddocks all over Matarawa 😍 Its reputation as a spring tonic makes it an excellent addition to my morning smoothies right now (also I don't much care for the flavour of it in a tea). I love Spring!

Confirmation that spring is here! The self-seeded Heartsease (Viola tricolour) has started springing up in our pathways. It looks like someone else is just as excited by its arrival as me judging by the chunks taken out of these flowers! Malcolm Harker recommends a daily application of the fresh leaves, bruised and pulped to reduce facial redness (there's a good quantity of salicylic acid in the leaves)

The weather has been miserable for weeks here in the lower North Island so I thought we all needed a little reminder of what's not too far away now! Lavender has powerful healing qualities which extend well beyond its most popular use now for soothing frazzled nerves. Back in the day it was the go-to remedy for healing sword wounds! The annual visits of the Monarchs to my lavender plants are always a special time 😍
