Osteoarthritis is one of the highest causes of disability in New Zealand, affecting 1️⃣ in 4️⃣ adults which directly affects not only their quality of life but their family life, economy and health system (Bosley & Miles, 2009).
A 3 year pilot study across Aotearoa, 20 DHB’s and 4783 (of which 19 percent identified as Maori), completed a Mobility Action Plan programme revealed a significant reduction in GP visits, reduced surgeries, reduced pain, increased mobility/function/quality of life, and improvements with mental health.
This programme involved educational sessions and exercise programmes provided to patients in the study.
From the study, Maori reports they were 3.6 times likely to report health improvements and 3x more likely to return to work/seek work.
