It's world breastfeeding week! Here's a throw back to me breastfeeding my eldest, many moons ago.
Breastfeeding came relatively easy to me (in hindsight). We had the usual cracked ni***es initially, but that settled quickly and with attention to latch. What I didn't have, however, was knowledge about ni**le thrush. THE WORST PAIN OF MY LIFE! I couldn't understand why all of a sudden, breastfeeding was absolute torture. Every time he stirred, I cried, knowing the pain I was about to endure feeding him.
I gave up before I had seen my midwife again or found an explanation.
With my subsequent 3 babies, thrush was never an issue. However, MULTIPLE bouts of mastitis was. Looking back, the speed at which things changed and I became so so sick is actually quite frightening. Thankfully, I had a great midwife who provided me with all the advice and home remedies and antibiotics when I needed.
After my 4th baby was born, I did some study and became a breastfeeding peer support person. This allowed me to meet with other parents who may have not been having the easiest BF journey and provide them with support and advice. It also opened my eyes to how many people struggled with breastfeeding for a multitude of reasons.
I acknowledge those that can't breastfeed, or choose not to for whatever reason. I see those that feel the grief. However you choose to feed your baby, I respect that. You do you, without judgment ❤️
