Why Ora – October Recap
October has been a month of aligning our kaupapa, showing manaakitanga, and walking alongside our taiohi as they prepare for their next steps. Here's a snapshot of the mahi:

Scholarship Success – Several taiohi have received scholarships as they prepare for their tertiary haerenga in 2026.

Maataki Shadowing – Marley and Amarlia spent time with Roka Osbourne at Tui Ora’s Taiohi Ora team, exploring hauora and social work.

Hoki Mai Wānanga – A relaxed kōrero session reconnecting with taiohi, sharing life updates, and celebrating two currently in cadetships.

First School Promo – We launched our first Why Ora secondary promo at Opunake High School, a big milestone in reaching future taiohi.

Prizegivings – We joined schools to celebrate taiohi achievements alongside their whānau and kura.

Ngā mihi to everyone involved, let’s keep backing our taiohi into strong futures.

Why Ora promos are in full swing – connecting with taiohi and schools!

This week, we’ve hit the ground running, visiting Sacred Heart, Stratford High, New Plymouth Boys’ High, Opunake High, and New Plymouth Girls’ High – and what a first week it’s been!

Our goal is simple: to kōrero with taiohi and the kura about who we are, what we do, why we do it, and the services we offer. We want build that hononga with taiohi and connect them to meaningful opportunities early, showing that a future career in health and education is possible.

It’s been inspiring meeting our future Why Ora taiohi, playing kemu, sharing kai, and reconnecting with past taiohi who came back to motivate the next wave.

Ngā mihi nui to everyone who welcomed us – this is just the beginning, and we’re so excited for what’s ahead!

Liahna shares her whakaaro on some pretty awesome Kaupapa:

Why growth happens in discomfort
Taking opportunities that scare you
Being proud of non-linear paths

Tonight’s Hoki Mai Wānanga was a bit different!

We had an informal whanaungatanga session with our taiohi, a chance to connect, kōrero, and welcome new faces to the kaupapa.

We caught up on what everyone’s been up to, their next steps in life, and how employment has been so far. Two taiohi are currently in cadetships, one as a wheelchair technician assistant and one in building.
A great night of connection, reflection, and strengthening our mahi together.

Let’s hear how the night went from one of our very own taiohi!

"Tonight here at Why Ora was a great time meeting new people, getting to know what everyone is doing for work and how it's been. I love being a part of Why Ora and hope to stay in contact with everyone."

Cleaner Day is a time to celebrate and acknowledge the vital work of our cleaners the unsung heroes who help keep our spaces safe, tidy, and welcoming every single day. Their mahi often happens behind the scenes, but the impact is seen and felt by everyone. Today, we pause to say thank you for the dedication, hard work, and care that cleaners bring to our workplaces, schools, and communities.

A huge mihi to Sophie our cleaner here at Why Ora, your dedication and hard work are deeply appreciated and never go unnoticed!

This week, we hear from Kate as she shares her experience shadowing in oral health and the incredible support, she’s received from her whānau as she continues her haerenga into study.

“Feeling incredibly grateful for the unwavering support from my whānau, especially my mum and dad, as I prepare to start university next year. Their encouragement, belief in me, and constant reassurance keep me motivated and grounded. From helping with applications to reminding me of my goals, their support means everything. I’m reminded every day that I’m not alone on this journey.” - Kate Johnston

Ngā mihi Kate for sharing your story - your determination and gratitude are inspiring!
