Prescription Update - What you need to know...

From February 2026, the NZ Government will allow Clinicians to write prescriptions for up to 12 months - but not everyone will qualify.

Who Needs More Frequent Reviews?

Some patients will still need to see their Prescriber every 3 or 6 months before getting a prescription. This includes people who: Have new or changing medications Need regular monitoring (like blood tests) Have multiple health conditions Are on medications with higher risks or side effects

Examples: Diabetics needing blood sugar checks; patients on antidepressants with recent changes or medications; patients with heart conditions taking multiple medications.

What About Controlled Drugs?

Medications like strong painkillers or sleeping pills are not included in 12 monthly prescribing. These still require regular reviews, usually every 1-3 months.

The Breast Cancer Foundation NZ have this bright pink motorhome that travels the country every year to meet women in the area they live in.
This service exists because 1 in 9 New Zealand women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Bringing the campervan to communities helps to ensure people can get access to life-saving information as early detection is the key.
People can pop into the Pink Campervan Breast Nurses and chat about anything from breast changes and mammograms to family risk and general breast health awareness. No appointment is needed and everyone is welcome.
Please see itinerary below :)

Greetings To Our Community,

Prescription Update - What You Need To Know

The NZ Government now allows GP's to write prescriptions for up to 12 months - but not everyone will qualify.
You may be eligible if your condition is stable and your medication hasn't changed. Some patients still need 3-6 monthly reviews to stay safe. Controlled drugs ( like strong pain killers or sleeping pills), are NOT included.
Even if the law allows it, the Doctor's job isn't just to write prescriptions. They still need to check in with you regularly and ensure that your treatment is right for you, that you're not having side effects, and nothing in your health has changed. Its about clinical responsibility - what's safe and right for you, not just legal rules.
Regular reviews help to catch any changes in your condition early, adjust medications if needed and make sure your treatment is still the best option for you.
So, even if you feel fine, your Doctor may still need to see you before giving you a longer prescription. Its not about red tape - its about keeping you safe and well.
Keep an eye out for our next post as there is more info to follow.

Greetings to our Community,

There are increasing numbers of measles cases in New Zealand.
If you think you or your family may have measles, please do not come into the Practice, give us a ring on 0786-77521 and we will organise for you to come in.
Measles is very contagious and we want to make sure all the other patients and our Staff are protected.
If you need to check your immunity, feel free to ring and talk to the Nurses.

" We are encouraging everyone to get vaccinated if you are not."

This represents monies raised through ticket sales for the show "Calendar Girls" and from sales of the calendars that were produced.
A few copies of the calendar are available for sale at $20 each.
Pop into Health Ngatea and see Babs at the Front Desk to purchase yours.
So awesome you wonderful women.

Do you have a pessary and are currently travelling to Waikato Hospital to have this managed?
We are pleased to announce we are offering a new pessary service!
We have a clinician who can assess prolapse, measure and order pessaries; fit and change them.
You do not need to be enrolled at our practice to access this service, it is open to everyone who needs it.
The initial assessment incurs a standard consult fee; but then there is funding available for the device, fitting and change/checks meaning pessary management is FREE.
Please note at present this service is only available on Fridays.
