Meeting yourself on the mat right where you are today - such an important part of yoga practice, and the best place to begin.
There are a few common misconceptions about yoga, and the funniest thing is that they often contradict each other.
⛔️ Yoga is just stretching.
⛔️ I have to be flexible to do yoga
⛔️ I tried yoga once and I wasn’t as “good” as the person beside me, it mustn’t be right for me.
And can I tell you, there’s no such thing as “good yoga”.
Strength, flexibility and fitness can be a result of practicing yoga, and while they are not a requirement to join class - you have to be willing to meet yourself where you are right in this moment.
If your fitness levels are lower, and something you want to work on, you need to be gentle with yourself and pause when YOU need a break - there is so much magic in listening to your body.
If you had never been for a run, and one day decided to start - would you expect to be able to run for an hour without a break? Or would you pause, catch your breath, have a sip of water, and slowly build up over time.
Part of the practice of yoga is the neural pathways forming - when you’re learning a new skill at first it can feel clunky, but after a few classes it starts to feel familiar and effortless. This is part of the journey.
And my reminder that comparison is the thief of joy. What happens on your neighbours mat has no impact on your practice. Your mat is your own little laboratory for self study.
