It's Mental Health Awareness Week and we love this year's theme of connecting with others as you bring the Five Ways to Wellbeing into your daily life:

Me aro tonu/ Take Notice
Tukua / Give
Me kori tonu / Be Active
Me whakawhanaunga / Connect
Me ako tonu / Keep Learning

If you're looking for a FREE way to connect with others in the community while also picking up tips for physical and emotional well-being, there's still time to join Ostend Medical Centre's Living Strong group, which meets every Monday through early December. Give us a call on 372 5005 to learn more!

🗣 The excitement is building at Ostend Medical Centre!

WHY?

In anticipation of the return of Dr Zoe Douglass in early October!

We know that many of you have stayed connected with Zoe in recent years through her virtual appointments as well as her in-person cover for the busy Christmas seasons, so you will be as delighted as we are that Zoe and her family have decided that now is the time for a permanent return to the motu. 👩‍⚕️

All of our patients have a GP who is their ‘designated provider.’ If you have enjoyed working with Dr Douglass in the past and would like her to become your designated provider, please call us on 09 372 5005 or email reception@ostendmedical.co.nz and let us know that you would like to make that change. 🙌

OH, AND THERE IS AN INVITE TOO!
To give the community a chance to welcome Zoe back, we’re inviting our patients to join us for morning tea on Thursday 23rd October between 10:30 and 11:30am. We will gather under the pōhutukawa tree in front of the clinic at 9 Belgium Street on the 23rd of October and hope that you can join us to say nau mai, hoki mai to Zoe! ❤️

Waiheke Health Trust is thrilled to announce that Dr Stephanie Cox, PhD, has moved into the new role of Community Services Coordinator for the Trust! 🥳🥳🥳

Steph has worked as an Occupational Therapist for the Trust since 2012 and also serves as our Quality Officer and liaison for the new Waihub. She is a determined housing advocate and 'bird nerd', volunteering as a trustee for Waiheke Community Housing Trust and as the administrator for the Rocky Bay Rat Busters.

But most of all, Steph is an inspiring, creative and dedicated clinician and colleague. We'll let her words speak for themselves:

'There is no greater joy than to hold a hemiplegic hand, to walk alongside a gradual loss of movement, to be part of the frustration of painstaking rehabilitation, the grief of disease and disability, and the strength of persistence and the celebration of wins with a patient’s whānau and friends.

I’m very much part of a team at the Waiheke Health Trust where disability, disease and death can be a beautiful thing. It is something that society often hides away, covers up, or turns away from. It is such a taonga to be welcomed in to be part of.'

Congratulations, Steph!

A very exciting moment today with the launch of WaiHub Connect! A little over 2 years ago we applied to Whaikaha to set up a service to make Waiheke accessible. We were not successful with our grant application, but didn't give up the dream. Eventually the stars aligned and Reach Out and the Waiheke Resources Trust and the Waiheke Health Trust have got together to establish a community drop in centre with big dreams. Massive thanks to Ngā Purapura for their performance, the Waiheke Local Board for their support, and the Kai Conscious food rescue team for the amazing spread. Waiheke is the absolute best!!! They 'bridged' an island AND helped the Waiheke Health Trust!

Huge thanks to the lovely folks at the Waiheke Bridge Club and the 2020 Waiheke Bridge Club who came together for a day of fun, raising over $1500!

Waiheke Health Trust is a charity and receives no government funding for essential medical equipment. Community groups like the bridge clubs make it possible for our doctors and nurses to have the tools they need.

Thank you Waiheke Bridge Club and 2020 Waiheke Bridge Club for your kindness and generosity!

What a day and what a venue!

A huge thank you to Waiheke Island Resort for sponsoring the Health Trust's meeting today to discuss what a model of care could look like for an integrated health hub on the island.

It was amazing to have folks with us from Waiheke Medical Centre, Ostend Medical Centre, Motu Midwives, ProCare, Health NZ - Te Toka Tumai Auckland, St John Waiheke, Waiheke Local Board along with lots of other community stakeholders to bring their perspectives to this essential conversation.

We couldn't have had a more beautiful or productive day! Thanks to all the participants and to Waiheke Island Resort.

Save the date – grab a mate!

On 25 June, please plan to join us for an evening focused on the health and well-being of the men in our community. Four experienced clinicians will offer a panel discussion covering the issues that often go unspoken but affect many.

The evening promises to be a safe, supportive space to hear expert insights and practical advice on both physical and mental health. Whether you're seeking answers, looking out for a mate, or just curious - this night is for you.

TOPICS WE WILL COVER
> Prostate health – what every man should know
> Anxiety and depression - recognising signs & seeking support
> Cardiovascular disease - why it’s more relevant than ever
> Erectile dysfunction - talking about it is the first step to taking action
> Healthy living – realistic strategies for feeling your best
> 'Mateship' and mental health – how to check in and show up for those around you

WHY IT MATTERS!
Erectile dysfunction can sometimes be an early warning sign of deeper health issues. Mental health challenges are more common than many realise. This evening is about breaking down stigma, sharing knowledge, and empowering men to take charge of their wellbeing.

DID YOU KNOW June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month?

The great news is that bowel cancer is over 90% curable, but only when caught early.

More than 1,200 Kiwi lives are lost because of bowel cancer each year.

Ask your GP about a bowel screen test kit, which you can do in the privacy of your own home and then return it as per the instructions.

>> If you have been sent one and haven't done it yet... action that this week! ❤️

Importantly seeing your GP as soon as symptoms appear is critical and could save your life.

Our GP services at Ostend Medical Centre have capacity RIGHT NOW for new patients, so don't hesitate to contact us on 372 5005 or email us: reception@ostendmedical.co.nz

This week, sadly, is the last week of the IN FOCUS – The Unseen Journey of Compassion, Commitment and Care heartfelt exhibition showcasing powerful imagery and deeply personal kōrero/stories from our patients and staff.

This is a rare glimpse into the incredible mahi of the Waiheke Health Trust - a behind-the-scenes look at the compassion, commitment, and care that they provide our island community every day.

With stunning photography by Rachel Mataria and storytelling brought to life by communications company NSPR, this exhibition represents hundreds of volunteer hours of mahi, passion and aroha to raise the awareness of the Waiheke Health Trust. Most of all, it honours our patients and staff who opened their homes and hearts to share their stories - a generous act of vulnerability and trust in our close-knit community.

Come and be inspired. Witness the beauty of care in action.

DATES: 8 May through to 1 June 2025

LOCATION: Mataira Gallery - Surfdale

TIME: Thursday to Sunday 9.30am - 3.00pm

COST: Free of charge

DID YOU KNOW THAT MAY IS MELANOMA AWARENESS MONTH?

Melanoma affects approximately 4,000 people in Aotearoa, our third most common cancer, and extremely sadly - 350 loved ones die annually.

Hear are some tips from Dr Dawn Davis, at Waiheke Health Trusts’ Ostend Medical Centre. We know you probably know most of these, but we wanted to give you a reminder.

* Wear sunscreen daily - even in winter on your face, neck and backs of your hands. Our sun is very strong and reflects off the water even with a hat on.

* Wear a hat when outside, even in winter.

* Early detection and regular checks are key.

If you are unsure, get it assessed by Dr Dawn Davis. She is qualified to biopsy moles if they just don’t look right, which of course saves you a trip to Auckland!
