🚑 A reminder that first aid knowledge matters.
A learner from one of our recent courses shared something that really stuck with us.

This was his very first first aid course, and before attending he had only completed our online learning.

The day before coming to the course, he was first on scene at a road traffic crash.

Before emergency services arrived, he was able to stay calm, assess the situation, and begin helping because he recognised what to do.

That matters.

You never know when learning first aid may become the moment someone needs you most. 💙

🩸 Most workplaces are not prepared for catastrophic bleeding.

First aid kits are designed for minor injuries — cuts, grazes, and basic medical issues.
But serious trauma is different.
A major bleed can become life-threatening within minutes if not controlled — especially with machinery incidents, vehicle crashes, or high-energy trauma.

🚑 Emergency response is not immediate.
Urban: 6–12 minutes
Rural: 10–25+ minutes

That gap is where outcomes are decided.

The question for businesses is simple:
If a severe bleed happened right now… what would you actually use before emergency services arrive?

For many workplaces, the honest answer is:
❌ Nothing designed for it.
This is the gap most organisations miss:
They are compliant for minor injuries — but not equipped for life-threatening haemorrhage.
That is where real risk sits.
Not in paperwork.
In capability.

🧰 Bleeding control kits are designed to close that gap.
Purpose-built trauma kits (such as North American Rescue kits) include:
• Tourniquets
• Haemostatic gauze
• Pressure dressings
• Trauma shears
• PPE

Designed for immediate use by non-medical responders in high-pressure situations.
The reality in trauma is simple:
It is not just about calling emergency services.
It is about what happens in the first minutes before they arrive.

🧠 Bottom line:
If your workplace cannot control catastrophic bleeding in those first critical minutes, you don’t have a bleeding control plan.
You have hope.
And hope is not a control measure.

🥶☀️ TOO COLD? TOO HOT?
Knowing what to do in the first few minutes can save a life.
Both hypothermia and hyperthermia can become life-threatening fast, especially in outdoor environments, workplaces, sports settings, farms, and remote areas.

🧊 Hypothermia First Aid — “STOP COLD”
✅ Shelter
✅ Take off wet clothes
✅ Observe breathing
✅ Prevent further heat loss
✅ Core rewarming
✅ Oral warm drinks (if alert)
✅ Limit movement
✅ Dial emergency services

⚠️ A person who stops shivering may actually be getting worse.

🔥 Hyperthermia First Aid — “COOL FAST”
✅ Cool the casualty
✅ Out of the heat
✅ Oral fluids (if alert)
✅ Loosen/remove clothing
✅ Fan and mist
✅ Activate emergency services
✅ Shade and rest
✅ Temperature monitoring

⚠️ Confusion, collapse, vomiting, seizures, or altered behaviour in the heat is a medical emergency.

💡 Simple actions. Massive difference.
The best first aiders are the ones who recognise deterioration early and act fast.

🩸 Would your workplace be ready for a life-threatening bleed?

Most standard first aid kits are great for minor injuries…
But when it comes to severe bleeding? They often fall short.

🚨 A person with a life-threatening bleed can bleed out in as little as 2–5 minutes.
Emergency services will be on their way — but they may not arrive in time.

👉 Those first few minutes are critical.

That’s where a Bleeding Control Kit makes the difference.
The NAR Bleeding Control Kit is purpose-built with life-saving equipment, including:

✔️ 1 x C-A-T® Tourniquet (Orange)
✔️ 1 x 15.2 cm NAR® Responder ETD (Emergency Trauma Dressing)
✔️ 2 x NAR® Wound Packing Gauze
✔️ 2 x Pair, Responder Nitrile Gloves (Large)
✔️ 1 x Responder Trauma Shears (18.4 cm)
✔️ 1 x NAR® Emergency Survival Blanket (142 cm x 244 cm)
✔️ 1 x Permanent Marker (Small)
✔️ 1 x Just in Time Instruction Card
✔️ 1 x PVC Bleeding Control Patch
✔️ 1 x Red Nylon Bag

These aren’t “nice-to-haves” — they’re critical tools that can mean the difference between life and death.

💡 The reality? Many workplaces are underprepared for major bleeds.
✅ Equip your team
✅ Train your staff
✅ Be ready when it matte

💉 Did you know? Naloxone saves lives.

Naloxone is a medication that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose. Opioids (like morphine, he**in, or nitazenes) can slow or even stop breathing and the heart — naloxone works by blocking these effects.

⚠️ Why this matters right now
We’re seeing more potent opioids like nitazenes in the drug supply — sometimes mixed into other substances. That means risk is higher, even if someone doesn’t think they’re taking opioids.

🛟 Be prepared
If you or someone close to you uses opioids:
✔️ Have naloxone on hand
✔️ Make sure friends or whānau know how to use it
✔️ Consider drug checking services to know what’s actually in substances
💡 In New Zealand
Injectable naloxone is currently available (free & accessible)
It comes in an ampoule and is injected into the muscle
Nasal sprays (Nyxoid/Narcan) are currently unavailable

📍 You can get naloxone from:
• Needle exchanges
• Your GP (prescription)
• Opioid substitution services

🚨 When to use naloxone
Watch for signs of overdose:
• Unresponsive or unconscious
• Slow or no breathing
• Gurgling/snoring sounds
• Blue lips or pale, cool skin
• Pinpoint pupils

📞 Act fast
Call 111 immediately
Give naloxone
Stay and monitor — more doses may be needed

💬 Naloxone is safe to give — even if you’re unsure what was taken.

🚨 THE TEN-SECOND TRIAGE 🚨
Rapid Life-Saving Decisions in Major Incidents
In a major incident, you don’t have minutes.
You have seconds.
🕒 10 seconds to decide:
• Who needs help now
• Who can wait
• Who sadly won’t survive without advanced care
This isn’t guessing — it’s structured triage.
🔴 RED – Immediate
Life-threatening bleeding, airway problems, unconscious but breathing.
🟡 YELLOW – Urgent
Serious injuries, stable for now, but need treatment soon.
🟢 GREEN – Walking wounded
Minor injuries. Can move, talk, and help others.
⚫ BLACK – Deceased / Expectant
No signs of life. Resources must go to those who can be saved.
🩸 Control catastrophic bleeding first
🫁 Open the airway
💓 Check breathing
🚑 Move fast. Reassess often.

This is why scenario-based training matters —
Under pressure, muscle memory saves lives.
