Our latest addition to the family, Ruby, was born in 2020. We call her our little "COVID pup".

She’s an absolute joy and a natural people-pleaser, always eager to satisfy her family. Due to the isolation of the pandemic, she grew up with only Jasper and Gemma, which has made her a little shy around other dogs. However, she’s always up for an adventure with kids.

Her most charming and quirky habit is sliding down slides, a trick she learned from watching the children. When we're out on walks, you'll always find Ruby close at Quinton's feet, a loyal and constant companion.

She'll run ahead on command, but she never roams far, always returning swiftly to her favorite person.

Gemma, registered as “Luamber Strike a Pose” was born on 27th November 2014 in South Nowra, outside of Sydney.

She made her big adventure to New Zealand as a tiny tot. We hoped she was going to grow bigger, however she never did and is a lot smaller than what we expected her to be.

Gemma is the Queen of the house and we suspect she must have spent some time with cats as a pup as she loves picking up her food and then playing with it like a cat.

She loves sitting on the arm rest, or a bright warm sunny spot. She’s mum to a few pups out there, including Ruby!

Paquitastoys Red Jaspar, known as Jasper Keyser, was born on 22 January 2014. Born in Cairns, Australia, Jasper made his way to New Zealand for a life of adventure.

Jasper soon got pulled into dog breed shows; after all he is a pure bred red toy Poodle! He soon got roped into all breed shows, being groomed for endless hours, being pranced around a show ring in the heat of day. The first challenge certificate showed us he is a great dog. With his elegant gait and stunning coat, he was groomed for endless hours and paraded around show rings. He even won a challenge certificate! But Jasper soon made it clear that a life of glamour wasn't for him.

This was the world of agility, and Jasper excelled at it. He moved with a speed and grace that earned him ribbons and certificates, and he even competed with the kids in the Junior divisions at the national championships. It was a journey of love, laughter, and success, culminating in Jasper becoming a proud dad to a few pups with his beloved life partner, Gemma.

AFTER THE BIRTH

What might things look like after the birth?

To be honest, we're open to having these discussions with our surrogate/s so that we can all fit in and make sure everyone's needs are met.

We are happy to share photos of the child with the surrogate, invite them to special birthdays and occasions, and for the surrogate to be known to the child. We are also conscious about online safety, and won't share images/videos of the child on social media.

We understand that the surrogate has their own family, and if they want to get updates, we are happy to share. However, we are not looking for a co-parenting set up.

Equally, if the surrogate does not want to be part of the child's life, we will respect that, too. Ultimately, everything is up for discussion, and we are happy to chat further privately if this is something you want to discuss.

SUPPORT FOR OUR SURROGATE

It's really important that we ensure we support our surrogate while she carries our baby. There are some things we want to (and legally) have to pay for ("reasonable" pregnancy related costs, medical and legal support, provide money/vouchers to purchase appropriate clothing), and there are some things we cannot do (buy new appliances, buy a new vehicle, etc).

Ultimately, we are very open to having these discussions with our surrogate to ensure we are meeting their needs. We are very grateful for whoever our surrogate/s may be, and we want to support them in every way we can!

SURROGACY IN AOTEAROA

Surrogacy in Aotearoa is pretty limiting in terms of what the intended parents can do/provide for the surrogates. We cannot approach a potential surrogate, nor can we pay her to carry our child. We do, however, have to pay for all "reasonable" costs associated with surrogacy. This can include medical and legal costs.

We talk through surrogacy in depth in a YouTube video that we''ll post later this week! See a wee snapshot here! https://f.mtr.cool/yhwnykjpij

JASPER, GEMMA, AND RUBY

Jasper, Gemma, and Ruby are our toy poodles. Jasper is 11, Gemma is 10, and Ruby is our five year old COVID baby. While we will introduce them over the next few weeks (with their own posts!), I couldn't resist sharing these gorgeous pics of our three poodles 😍

TRAVEL

As a nurse practitioner, I can confidently say that we have been infected with the travel bug!

We spend a lot of time travelling New Zealand; there are always new places to discover! We have been to Queenstown, New Plymouth, Auckland, Napier, Wellington, and Wanaka. We are currently on our way home after a week in Christchurch.

Where are your favourite places to visit?

DID YOU KNOW WE ARE POLICE VETTED?

Yes, you read that correctly. We are both police vetted.

Why?

Barry required police vetting as a part of his work (nurse practitioner), while Quinton got police vetting when we applied to be Oranga Tamariki foster parents.

What this means is that the police have checked out our backgrounds, and have deemed us as safe to have Oranga Tamariki foster placements.
