Franklin Anxiety Support

Anxiety is defined as "an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure. People with anxiety disorders usually have recurring intrusive thoughts or concerns. They may avoid certain situations out of worry. They may also have physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, dizziness or a rapid heartbeat" (American Psychological Association, 2018). It is a huge, worldwide problem and can cause tremendous impairment to everyday life is left. However, some simple tools and knowledge can greatly alleviate it's effects. My name is Debbie Gill and I will be facilitating these sessions. I have a Bachelors degree in Psychology/Education from Canterbury University, a Post graduate certificate in Health Psychology from Auckland University and have worked in health for 20 years. I can not only appreciate the struggle from an academic viewpoint but from a personal perspective as I have previously struggled with anxiety and I also have a 7-year-old boy who is learning coping strategies in these areas. Anxiety has always been the focus and passion for which has inspired my continued study.

~ Please note that all education and supportive tools suggested on these courses fit within the evidence-based practice approach. Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour and alignes itself with the medical model of health.

FUTURE SESSIONS: • Education session for parents of children struggling with anxiety (Primary and Intermediate age) • Education session for parents of teens struggling with anxiety (Secondary age group) Only 10 places will be available in each class which will help facilitate discussion and group dynamics.
