Aratika Cancer Trust

Aratika Cancer Trust Empowering you to live well. Integrative lifestyle programmes and residential retreats supporting people and their whanau impacted by a cancer diagnosis.

Wellbeing seminars and workshops. Mindfulness, meditation and relaxation. The science of healing. Many organisations, both professional and voluntary, exist for research and treatment of cancer. However, most patients diagnosed with cancer are keen to do something for themselves about their condition. “What can I do?” is a common question put to doctors by patients desperate to do something more than rely upon conventional surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Research has shown that more than 80% of patients with a diagnosis of cancer will use some form of alternative, integrative, or complementary therapy. With the belief that attending to our emotional, mental, spiritual and physical health is essential to our wellbeing, the Aratika Trustees are committed to facilitating integrative medicine programmes to educate and empower people with a cancer diagnosis.

We had the privilege of joining a beautiful group if wahine at the ‘Look good feel better’ class last week in Rotorua. It was fun, informal and a chance to chat with others in a similar situation.

Did you know they also run a bunch of mind-body online classes?
Including - yoga, mindfulness, restorative stretching, breathwork, mat Pilates and sessions such as tips about skincare, hair loss/wigs & scarf tying.

Check them out online and see if any classes interest you.

We are so lucky to have Te Ngae Physiotherapy and Pilates here to support our locals, take a moment to see who your local Pinc & Steel provider is.

We are lucky to have two PINC & STEEL physios, Lisa Cliffe from Active+ Taupo, Turangi & Rotorua and Mel Loveless from Te Ngae Physiotherapy and Pilates, in Rotorua. If you’ve been thinking about taking the next step and seeking some physio support, don’t hesitate – it’s worth it!

Speaking from personal experience, after my surgery and radiation I struggled to raise my arm. I went through PINC & STEEL and received some free physio support – what a difference it made!

A few targeted massages by an expert physio with exercises sorted out the “grumpy” muscles. I now have full mobility in my shoulder.

Our Story

Many organisations, both professional and voluntary, exist for research and treatment of cancer. However, most patients diagnosed with cancer are keen to do something for themselves about their condition. “What can I do?” is a common question put to doctors by patients desperate to do something more than rely upon conventional surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Research has shown that more than 80% of patients with a diagnosis of cancer will use some form of alternative or complimentary therapy. However, in the absence of a recognised path for such treatments, obtaining the information is often haphazard involving the internet, and the advice of well-meaning but poorly informed friends and family. Frequently the one person who is not consulted is the doctor, who, it is suspected, would ‘disapprove’. This is frustrating for medical professionals since, among a number of totally useless alternative treatments, there is a group of therapies that have proven clinical value. These have recently been identified by Professor Shaun Holt of the School of Biological Sciences, Victoria University, in his book Complementary Therapies for Cancer. What works, what doesn’t… and how to tell the difference (Craig Potton Publishing, 2010). It is these therapies, in conjunction with the Gawler Foundation, that provide the basis for the programme offered by the Aratika Trust.

We follow a lot of the wisdom & research from the Quest for Life Foundation in NSW Australia and frequently refer to the book Radical Remission by Kelly A Turner is our workshops and Wellness Retreats.
