The Wish 4 Fish Charity

Access for all! Our country has some of the most beautiful natural resources in the world and we believe all New Zealanders should be able to enjoy this.

We help people with health and wellness challenges get out on the water and enjoy the freedom and pleasure of our ocean waters along with inspiring change in attitude to accessibility and inclusivity across our communities. Fishing and boating are some of New Zealand’s most popular recreational activities, which those with physical and mental disabilities are currently not being catered for. To share these experiences with our wider community, we arrange charity trips for individuals with physical and mental disabilities and their carer’s, who are often family members. The benefits from our trips go beyond a day out on the water. It provides our Charity’s beneficiaries the sense of what can be achieved despite some of the most difficult circumstances they experience. A day out on the water can bring so much joy and can provide our beneficiaries with lifelong memories – we witness this every trip – we call these magic moments. Something significant happens when people are empowered to go fishing. They move from being a beneficiary, to being a provider. This is a fundamental shift in identity, which allows them to not be defined through the lens of their disability or life challenges. When paired with a strong sense of adventure, comradery and achievement, the positive outcomes, excitement and lift in self-esteem is tangible. You can see it in the faces, eyes and body language of those on board.

🐟This week we welcomed Frankton Park onboard, what an awesome group!

For this group to come away from a day at sea reporting that all guests were made to feel special, many cannot stop talking about their day and to have initial hesitation by some guests transformed into loving the experience and wanting to join us again, is confirmation that we are achieving exactly what we set out to provide to our communities.

“The support is great, with brilliant volunteers and the boat is perfect for someone like me who uses a power wheelchair. Even managed to catch a nice sized snapper! Excellent day and I can’t say enough about this boat and the people who support it.”

Our fully wheelchair-accessible catamaran is purpose-built to make the magic of fishing possible for everyone. It's all thanks to the incredible support of donations, community funders and Volunteers 🩵

🎣 5 Must-Know Tips for Fishing in Aotearoa!

Whether you’re chasing snapper, kahawai, or kingies, these five fundamentals will up your game on the water:

1️⃣ Target species by season: Ensure you’re customising your set up to match the fish of the season.
2️⃣ Invest in quality bait: Your bait matters, it’s worth investing more to tempt your target species with their fav treats.
3️⃣ Fish with the tides: Incoming tides bring in baitfish and predators—fish an hour before and after high tide.
4️⃣ Use peak bite windows: sunrise/sunset = prime time
5️⃣ Find fishy structure: Reefs, rocks, and drop-offs are gold!
