TAIRAWHITI CIVIL DEFENCE: This is a slow moving weather event. We continue to monitor rivers and are getting more reports of land movement as the ground becomes more and more saturated.
๐ง Weather update
๐ Intensities have been lower, less rain fall than expected
๐ More rain forecast across the district but a decrease in the amount and intensity
๐ Over the next 24 hours MetService have advised to expect:
๐ง 60 -100mm forecast for north of Uawa
๐ง 50-70mm about the ranges
๐ง 25-40mm forecast for coast areas and south of Uawa
๐ง Both the Hikuwai and Waipaoa river levels have been rising throughout the morning, with signs the Hikuwai is dropping after it peaked at 9.6m at 10.30am
๐ Waipaoa River is still rising, at 6.6m as rain continues to fall in the catchment.
๐ง State Highways, Waka Kotahi advise:
๐ SH2 south is open at this stage
๐ SH2 north remains closed overnight. A geotech team have done an inspection of the Otoko Hill and are on their way back in with findings.
๐ Waka Kotahi have been advised thereโs a washout in the Waioeka Gorge, more info will be available once the inspection has been completed.
๐ SH35 closed right now, thereโs a slip at Makorori and a crew on site clearing it. The road to Tologa Bay will once once the slip is cleared.
๐ SH35 will close again from Okitu to Ruatoria at 5pm
๐ง Local roads
๐ 46 road closures over this event, in addition to roads still closed since Gabrielle
๐ Type and severity of faults is increasing with drop outs, slumping and landslides
๐ Motorists attempting Wharekopae Road - this road is closed as it has significant hazards.
๐ Delay unnecessary travel and no rubbernecking - thereโs surface flooding and slips affecting a lot of roads, especially our rural roads.
๐ง 300 customers without power with 63 at Tauwharepare and thereโs no access available into some sites.
๐ Bushy Knoll residents are cut-off with no bridge access and no power.
๐ The roads are getting too dangerous for the contractors as slips and trees are coming down - health and safety risk while it continues to rain.
