You Don’t Just Lose Someone Once,
You lose them over and over,
sometimes many times a day.

When the loss, momentarily forgotten,
creeps up,
and attacks you from behind.

Fresh waves of grief as the realisation hits home,
they are gone.

Again.

You don’t just lose someone once,
you lose them every time you open your eyes to a new dawn,
and as you awaken,
so does your memory,
so does the jolting bolt of lightning that rips into your heart,
they are gone.

Again.

Losing someone is a journey,
not a one-off.

There is no end to the loss,
there is only a learned skill on how to stay afloat,
when it washes over.

Be kind to those who are sailing this stormy sea,
they have a journey ahead of them,
and a daily shock to the system each time they realise,
they are gone,

Again.

You don’t just lose someone once,
you lose them every day,
for a lifetime.

“Mac was many things to many people: outgoing, compassionate, kind, and full of life. He was fun-loving and a natural entertainer, the kind of man who left an impression wherever he went.

His life was full of chapters, some wild, some challenging, and many filled with love and laughter.

He lived big, he loved deeply, and he'll be remembered for the way he made people feel, welcomed, included, and never far from a good story or a hearty laugh”

Mac, it was an honour to officiate your life celebration with your family and friends at your beautiful memorial. What would’ve been your birthday 🤍

🕊️ How is a casket lowered at a burial in Aotearoa?
It's a question many people don't think to ask, until they're planning a farewell for someone they love.

In New Zealand, caskets are lowered either manually using strong straps or with a mechanical device, depending on the cemetery and family wishes.

Here in South Canterbury and the Mackenzie District, it's usually a manual process. Pallbearers gently lower the casket into the earth by hand, with care and coordination. It's a powerful, personal hands-on moment of goodbye.

Some cemeteries or funeral directors also use a mechanical casket lowering device, especially for heavier caskets or where extra support is needed.

💚 Green burials often involve manual lowering, too, staying aligned with eco-conscious values and simplicity.

Whatever the method, the process is handled with compassion and respect. Every farewell is different, and it's okay to ask questions so your choices feel right.

Wrapping someone in a cloth, sheet, or blanket is a sacred final act of care , a gentle preparation for their final rest.
