The latest research confirms that social isolation and loneliness have different impacts on cognitive health. While loneliness may be mediated by depression, social isolation's effect on cognitive decline is more closely linked to a lack of mental stimulation. This highlights the importance of providing both a vibrant social life and genuine connection to promote cognitive well-being.

The residents at Kowhainui Home recently took part in a fun and friendly tradition: Potato in a Bucket Day! Each resident planted their very own seed potatoes in a bucket, which was then carefully labelled with their name. Over the next few months, the staff and residents will be watching them grow to see whose bucket produces the best spuds.

Come Christmas time, they will harvest them all and enjoy the potatoes together at their special Christmas lunch. It's a little competition, a lot of smiles, and something tasty to look forward to!

Woburn Home recently welcomed spring with its first Fine Dining Lunch. Residents were delighted by the Recreation team's beautiful table decorations, which
featured vivid, spring-colored centerpieces and napkins folded to look like flowers 🌷.

Each place setting included a chocolate treat. Before the meal, students from Whitireia University performed a vibrant Colombian dance. Their bright, joyful outfits and energetic performance lit up the room and had residents smiling
from ear to ear.

The group visited each area, earning applause from everyone. Residents appreciated not only the delicious meal prepared by the kitchen staff but also the shared moments of fun and laughter. The Recreation team served red and white wine, along with other refreshments. As the morning concluded, residents stayed to chat about their positive experience and the lovely decorations.

Everyone felt a sense of happiness, a reminder that this simple idea was a true blessing that won't soon be forgotten ❤. The excitement continued into the afternoon when "The Happy Wonderers" surprised the residents with their golden oldies music. Many residents sang along, making it a wonderful day for everyone!

We're excited to share the amazing start of the new Kōwhai Community Day Programme in Whanganui! Designed for older people, especially those with memory loss or dementia, the programme helps them stay connected, active, and independent. It's a welcoming space offering activities like painting, gardening, and cooking—all led by qualified therapists who focus on what brings people joy and purpose.

The programme is already making a huge difference, improving mood and confidence while creating new friendships. Thanks to a generous $20,000 grant from Whanganui Community Foundation we can now offer this support to even more elders in our community, ensuring those who need it most can attend and feel connected ❤.

Today marks International Day for Older Persons ❤️.

In a world where artificial intelligence can generate answers in seconds and information is always at our fingertips, it’s easy to forget that some things simply can’t be rushed – like life experience.

This day is about pausing to reflect on the incredible contributions of older people in our lives, families, and communities. Whether it’s through storytelling, mentorship, there are so many ways to show appreciation.

Combined across the 7 Enliven organisations in NZ, we support over 14,000 older Kiwis every year with care that focuses on independence, wellbeing, and connection. But we can all do something whether big or small to reduce ageism and celebrate our elders.

Four meaningful ways we can show how we appreciate older people as we celebrate International Day for Older Persons:

🌱 Mentorship. Older people are excellent mentors for others. Our older people have so much to teach us. Let’s find ways of connecting with them so that this can happen.

🏠 Visits. Loneliness is a growing issue, and connection makes a big difference. A simple phone call or visit can turn someone’s whole day around.

📖 Storytelling. Make time to hear older people’s stories. Encourage them to record them so future generations can have a valuable insight into what it “used to be like” back in the day.

❤ Connection. Find ways of connecting people of all generations with each other. This fosters mutual learning, joy and laughter between young and old.

At Enliven we’re inviting all New Zealanders to share their views through our nationwide survey to hear your thoughts on how we can better support older New Zealanders. You can do this by visiting:

The planter boxes are bursting with produce! 🥕

Some of the residents came out to help with the harvest of the baby carrots. They commented that the carrots were quite small with so many leaves.

Upon checking the picture on the tag, they saw that these carrots are indeed meant to be small. The group filled two baskets with the baby carrots. Some of the produce from the planter boxes will be used for residents' meals, and some will be donated to local community organisations. This is Cashmere Home's way of giving back to the community.

Did you know one of the simplest and most powerful ways to connect with your loved one is through music?

Music therapy is a wonderful tool that has been shown to help manage symptoms of dementia by improving mood, boosting memory, and reducing feelings of isolation. Sharing a song can be a beautiful way to create a moment of connection and joy.

A great place to start is by creating a playlist of music they loved in their youth, specifically between the ages of 16 and 26. These are often the songs that spark the strongest memories. For many of our residents, that means tunes from the 1950s and early '60s.

Some of the artists that might bring a smile to their face are:

Nat King Cole

Patti Page

Elvis Presley

Frank Sinatra

Bill Haley and His Comets

Chuck Berry

Johnny Cash

Dean Martin

Joy is one of the seven Eden Domains of Wellbeing, and we all need moments of pure delight to make life feel worth living 🦋🌸. Older people are no different. Joy can be found in simple things, from spotting a butterfly on a flower or singing a hymn to having a belly laugh with a friend over tea. You will know what brings your loved one joy.

Today, World Alzheimer’s Day, we’re joining a vital global movement to raise awareness about dementia and show support for those living with it, as well as their families and caregivers.

It’s a common misconception that dementia is a normal part of getting older. While the risk increases with age, dementia is not a natural part of the ageing process. It’s a syndrome caused by various brain diseases, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common.

This day is a reminder that by talking about dementia openly, we can help reduce the stigma and ensure that people get the support they need.

@ AlzheimersNZ have many resources https://alzheimers.org.nz/

You can also help show your support by donating to our cause: Spark of Life Education. This training helps provide a human-centered approach to education for our staff and carers of people living with dementia. You can donate towards our appeal here https://www.enlivencentral.org.nz/winter-appeal/

✨ Tip of the Month: Te Taha Wairua/Spiritual Health ✨

Gift ideas this month reflect spiritual health and wellness for our residents and older community 🌱.

According to a number of studies, going to church regularly can extend your life, reduce your risk of depression, and lower your blood pressure. Meditation and yoga have also been shown to have health benefits.

From a scientific perspective, measuring church attendance or yoga practice is easy, whereas measuring one's spirituality is a little more subjective, so less research has been discovered. Māori have always acknowledged the importance of spiritual health, and Te Whare Tapa Whā (the four cornerstones of wellbeing) puts spirituality on an equal footing with physical, mental, and social health.

Enliven actively supports the spiritual health of its residents. To do this, new residents are asked to complete an Oranga Kaumatua Wellness Map when they move into our homes. The taha wairua section of the map helps us to determine what we need to do to meet each individual's spiritual needs, whatever they may be!
