Did you know one of the simplest and most powerful ways to connect with your loved one is through music?

Music therapy is a wonderful tool that has been shown to help manage symptoms of dementia by improving mood, boosting memory, and reducing feelings of isolation. Sharing a song can be a beautiful way to create a moment of connection and joy.

A great place to start is by creating a playlist of music they loved in their youth, specifically between the ages of 16 and 26. These are often the songs that spark the strongest memories. For many of our residents, that means tunes from the 1950s and early '60s.

Some of the artists that might bring a smile to their face are:

Nat King Cole

Patti Page

Elvis Presley

Frank Sinatra

Bill Haley and His Comets

Chuck Berry

Johnny Cash

Dean Martin

Joy is one of the seven Eden Domains of Wellbeing, and we all need moments of pure delight to make life feel worth living 🦋🌸. Older people are no different. Joy can be found in simple things, from spotting a butterfly on a flower or singing a hymn to having a belly laugh with a friend over tea. You will know what brings your loved one joy.

Happy Monday! ☕✨

Today, World Alzheimer’s Day, we’re joining a vital global movement to raise awareness about dementia and show support for those living with it, as well as their families and caregivers.

It’s a common misconception that dementia is a normal part of getting older. While the risk increases with age, dementia is not a natural part of the ageing process. It’s a syndrome caused by various brain diseases, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common.

This day is a reminder that by talking about dementia openly, we can help reduce the stigma and ensure that people get the support they need.

@ AlzheimersNZ have many resources https://alzheimers.org.nz/

You can also help show your support by donating to our cause: Spark of Life Education. This training helps provide a human-centered approach to education for our staff and carers of people living with dementia. You can donate towards our appeal here https://www.enlivencentral.org.nz/winter-appeal/

✨ Tip of the Month: Te Taha Wairua/Spiritual Health ✨

Gift ideas this month reflect spiritual health and wellness for our residents and older community 🌱.

According to a number of studies, going to church regularly can extend your life, reduce your risk of depression, and lower your blood pressure. Meditation and yoga have also been shown to have health benefits.

From a scientific perspective, measuring church attendance or yoga practice is easy, whereas measuring one's spirituality is a little more subjective, so less research has been discovered. Māori have always acknowledged the importance of spiritual health, and Te Whare Tapa Whā (the four cornerstones of wellbeing) puts spirituality on an equal footing with physical, mental, and social health.

Enliven actively supports the spiritual health of its residents. To do this, new residents are asked to complete an Oranga Kaumatua Wellness Map when they move into our homes. The taha wairua section of the map helps us to determine what we need to do to meet each individual's spiritual needs, whatever they may be!

Brightwater Home Goes Above and Beyond ✨

We’re thrilled to celebrate the incredible work of Debbie and Jennifer, whose creativity and initiative have brought a meaningful new addition to the Brightwater environment.

Debbie and Jenny recently designed and installed a thoughtful display (pictured) that’s already drawing attention from residents, families, and visitors. The display is not only beautifully presented but also serves as a powerful tool for education and reflection, creating teachable moments that support understanding and connection across our care community.

Their work exemplifies the kind of compassionate innovation that makes a real difference. By using their skills to enhance the space in such a purposeful way, Debbie and Jenny have shown how simple, well-designed ideas can foster engagement and deepen the experience of care.

Ka pai, Debbie and Jenny!

We are proud to share a glimpse into the person-centered dining experience at Chalmers Home 💙

Our Clinical Director, Mikeala, recently observed how the positive atmosphere in our dining room contributes to residents' long-term health and happiness. For her, it wasn't just about nutrition; it was about the warmth and care that our team brings to every meal.

Mikeala shared, "I noticed that the dining room was filled with warmth, laughter, and gentle conversations. Our Home Manager and Clinical Nurse Manager demonstrated exceptional attention to individual resident needs, especially around dietary requirements."

She highlighted how meals for residents on soft diets and finger foods were thoughtfully supported and beautifully presented to uphold each person's dignity and independence. "It was clear that both the Home Manager and Clinical Nurse Manager went the extra mile in their roles," she said.

A particularly touching moment involved a resident with swallowing difficulties. The Home Manager ensured the food's texture was modified to be appealing and sat beside them at eye level, offering kind words and plenty of time for each bite. This gentle encouragement and support helped the resident, who is usually hesitant at mealtimes, feel comfortable and cared for.

This dedication truly shows our team's commitment to providing a nurturing environment where every detail matters.

During the final winter days, Longview's day kicked off with a cosy High Tea, with residents rugged up in scarves and earmuffs to embrace the season in style 🧣.

The fun continued with classic winter games, snowball fights, snowball bucket toss, and throwing the snowball through the snowman, as residents cheered each other on, hoping to win the special Winter Celebration Prize!

The afternoon took a musical turn as DJ brought out his ukulele, serenading the crowd while Diversional Therapists Gail and Nicky got everyone chair-dancing and smiling. With clapping hands, tapping feet, and joyful voices, the room came alive. To top it all off, residents enjoyed a well-earned Happy Hour.

Staff joined in the festive spirit too, sharing a delicious lunch – and what a feast it was! From hearty mains to mouthwatering desserts and drinks, no one went hungry. A prize was awarded to the best-dressed winter wonder, making it extra fun to dress up.

It was a magical day full of warmth, laughter, and community spirit. Now, Longview turns its eyes to spring... and the next celebration just around the corner!

The team at Cashmere Heights and Cashmere Home recently celebrated the season with a special Midwinter Celebration! ❄️❄️❄️

In the week leading up to the event, the residents, along with their wonderful volunteers, got busy preparing. The Kaumatua made delicious ice cream and Christmas cake, while also crafting beautiful decorations, including snowflakes and painted pinecones.

On the day of the celebration, the dining rooms were filled with festive cheer. At Cashmere Homes, residents pulled Christmas crackers, laughed at the jokes, and donned their festive crowns, while at Cashmere Heights, residents enjoyed drawing Christmas-themed pictures.

A delicious menu of glazed ham and Christmas cake was served, and the homemade ice cream, crafted by the residents, was a massive hit, with many wanting more! This special lunch was a joy for the Cashmere Kaumatua, who truly enjoyed the celebration, especially knowing they had contributed to the delicious baking and beautiful decorations. It was a day filled with joy, connection, and a wonderful feeling of pride ☺️.

It’s World Alzheimer’s month, and this September is for a deeper understanding of dementia and to take the opportunity to listen, understand, support, and educate 🫶

You may know the heartbreak of watching a loved one disappear in small, disorienting steps. The world can become a confusing and frightening place for them, and a simple task like having a shower can become a source of fear and struggle.

This is the reality for almost 83,000 people living with dementia in New Zealand. And while we pride ourselves on providing compassionate care, the rise in dementia diagnoses means we must do more.

That's why we’re advocating for our Spark of Life dementia training for our staff. This isn't just about clinical care; it's about a human-centred approach that can transform a moment of fear into one of safety and comfort.

We are taking advantage of this opportunity this month to raise funds so that our staff can participate in four specialised modules focused on a heart-centred approach – the person behind the condition. It's a chance to make a tangible difference in the lives of people living with dementia and their families.

Longview Home have been making the most of the beautiful, warm, sunny days by taking residents on scenic van drives to the beach for a relaxing afternoon tea ☕

Residents enjoyed sandwiches, a favourite treat, while soaking in the sunshine, breathing in the fresh ocean air, and simply enjoying the moment. These outings are a regular part of life at Longview, and the residents absolutely love them ❤️.

This practice reflects Eden Principle #4: an elder-centred community creates opportunities to give as well as receive care, which is the antidote to helplessness. These outings offer meaningful engagement, connection with nature, and a sense of purpose and pleasure in everyday life which is the very essence of person-directed care.

The team at Longview is looking forward to more trips like this around Wellington as spring and summer approach 🌸🌼💐.
