‘MyStory’ by me, Lara Hofer, the Mum behind Myscar.
April being International Caesarean Section Awareness month it seems only fitting to re-introduce myself and re-share my story in the hopes to promote more awareness particularly in the recovery/postpartum phase.
In short, almost 7 years ago today I had an emergency C-Section birth. A medically necessary, life-saving procedure. My birth required an operating theatre and approximately 10 medical professionals to deliver my baby breathing. No photos were taken in delivery. I lost 1.5L of blood. My baby was born with a life-threatening infection. Our recovery was a long hard road, both mentally and physically. I was left with an unexpected traumatic scar which led me down the empowering path to creating Myscar and the premium silicone scar products we have today. We are lucky, we survived but it took time to heal.
Through my experience, I have learned that the narrative around C-Sections (planned or unplanned) needs to change. It is not the easy way out or an inferior way to give birth. Too often, people refer to a vaginal birth as a ‘natural’ birth (and I am previously guilty of it too), but it only makes a C-Section birth sound like the opposite. Birth is birth. I support the choice of the individual and doing whatever is right for them. It is their body and baby after all.
I would have loved to have shared a positive C-Section birth, because I know they exist. I know they can be calm, controlled, and empowering. Mine wasn’t. I now know I am not alone and neither are you.
