Bidwill Trust Hospital Modern purpose built, private surgical hospital. Located in Timaru, South Canterbury. There are three fully equipped operating theatres.

Bidwill is the only private surgical hospital in the South Canterbury region, offering an extensive range of services including general surgery, orthopaedics, ENT, gynaecology and ophthalmology. The hospital is a charitable trust and all profits are invested back into the hospital ensuring that the best equipment and facilities are maintained. The hospital was rebuilt in 2001, and redeveloped in 2011, having provided health services to the people of South Canterbury since 1912. With just 14 inpatient beds and a 15 bed day surgery unit, Bidwill is small enough to provide quality personalised care and attention.

The extension was officially opened in March 2023 and the building received Property Council New Zealand award in June 2024.

It can sometimes be difficult for healthcare students to obtain practical and appropriate experience in specialised fields. However, there are currently four healthcare students working onsite at Bidwill Trust Hospital, four from Ara in Timaru and one from AUT - Auckland University of Technology – the first time the hospital has welcomed students from Auckland.

Bidwill is passionate about supporting students and ensuring that their clinical placements develop the skills that cannot be taught in a classroom.

Tessa Orange, the inaugural recipient of the Bernadette East Nursing Scholarship is grateful for the ongoing support she has received from the Bidwill team, and the financial ease that the scholarship gave her while she completed her nursing studies. She is now employed as a graduate nurse at Bidwill Trust Hospital.

Pictured below is Tessa (third from left), Bidwill’s lead anaesthetic technician Phillipa McEwan (far left) and the four nursing students.
