Allergy New Zealand Allergy New Zealand is a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping people living with allergies.

Allergy NZ has the advice and support of a medical panel, which is made up of allergy specialists, nurses and dietitians, in order to keep our members informed with reliable, up to date allergy advice. We also represent the interests of people with allergies to government, policy makers and the media. We provide information and guidance to the health, education and food sectors and support research. Since 2007, we have been honoured to have Peter Charles Leitch QSM , aka The Mad Butcher, as our Allergy New Zealand Ambassador. Peter has provided an enormous amount of support in fundraising and building our profile.

👶 DID YOU KNOW? 👶

Once you have fed your baby the common allergy-causing foods for the first time, it is important to continue to include these foods in your baby’s diet about twice a week.

It is important you feed the common allergy causing foods to your baby when you can watch for any signs of an allergic reaction. For example, feeding well-cooked egg and smooth peanut butter soon after your baby wakes, allows you to watch your baby and easily respond if they show signs of an allergic reaction.

Since March last year, medicines are required to include warning statements if they contain potential allergens used as active and inactive ingredients (excipients).

The Medsafe labelling rules now require the pharmaceutical company to add a warning statement to the medicine box or packaging. If the medicine container is small, the warning statement will be on the information leaflet inside the container. There may be some information about your medicine that only the pharmaceutical company can provide, so you may need to speak with them directly.

If you or your child has a food allergy, always double check the label and leaflet before consuming any product, including medication.

Did you know about one in 10 (10 per cent) infants have a food allergy by 12 months of age? Some will outgrow their food allergies, mainly to milk and eggs.

It is estimated that 6-8% of school age children and 2-4% of adults live with a food allergy.

Keep an eye on your local landmark this week – it might be turning pink and purple to mark National Eosinophilic Week (3–9 August).

To raise awareness of eosinophil-associated diseases (EADs), more than 125 landmarks will be shining brightly across Australia and New Zealand.

In Aotearoa, this includes the Michael Fowler Centre, Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū, New Plymouth Clock Tower, the Oamaru Opera House, and more.

The pink and purple colours represent eosinophils—a type of white blood cell involved in certain immune responses. When too many eosinophils build up in parts of the body, they can cause inflammation and tissue damage, which may indicate an EAD.

What exactly is a ‘may contain' statement?

While not covered by regulation, ‘may contain’ statements (Precautionary Allergen Labelling) are placed on products to identify that allergens may be in a product due to cross-contact at some point in the manufacturing process.

Due to the lack of regulation, it is not possible to assess whether a product would be safe or not for a person living with an allergy.

Consumers with food allergies are advised to avoid foods that ‘may contain’ their allergen, or to contact the manufacturer to seek further information.

Do you have suggestions on how the health service could be improved?

Do you have difficulties accessing the services you need or have health and wellbeing needs that are going unmet?

An interdisciplinary research team from AUT - Auckland University of Technology, University of Auckland - Waipapa Taumata Rau, Massey University, and the University of Otago, are seeking healthcare consumers and allied health professionals to help them shape the future of healthcare services. The study aims to identify innovative ideas that meet the health and wellbeing needs of the New Zealand public.

A series of workshops/wānanga will be held in Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, and Dunedin and each participant will be asked to attend all three in their local area. Each workshop will be held one month apart between July and October. Workshops will be held in the afternoon/evening (approximately four hours’ long), with food and refreshments provided.
