I had the pleasure of speaking with Mike Hosking Newstalk ZB this morning about declining milk consumption and the impact on our health.

Milk is a nutritional powerhouse but sadly milk consumption in NZ is declining - meaning many Kiwis may be missing out on the vital nutrients milk provides.

Just 250ml glass of milk provides a third of your daily calcium, 8g of protein and around half of your daily vitamin B2 .

Young adults need to keep in mind that calcium, which milk is an excellent source of, is crucial for building strong bones and teeth, maintaining muscles, and supporting overall body health during this vital stage of life….

New Zealanders are consuming 1.2 million fewer glasses of milk every year, fuelling health concerns that we are missing out on vital nutrients.

That’s right, you don’t have to eat (or even like) kale to be “healthy” 🥬

In fact, I personally can’t stand the stuff. It’s all tough and has a rough texture that I’m not a fan of, so you won’t find kale on my plate anytime soon.

However, there was a time not so long ago that it appeared that EVERYONE was eating kale and getting onboard with its “superfood” status.

Truth be told, kale isn’t even that ‘super’ when it comes to looking at its overall nutritional and antioxidant status. While there’s no denying that kale is a nutritious green, it is a vegetable after all, it is not the MOST nutritious vegetable or fruit as ranked by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. The top spot in fact goes to watercress, with Chinese cabbage, Romaine and leaf lettuce, and spinach all taking out higher rankings than Kale.

So don’t be swayed into eating something you don’t like in an effort to be ‘healthy’ or to follow the latest food trend. As long as you’re eating a variety and plenty of colourful plant foods, you’ll be doing a-ok, regardless of whether you eat kale!

What’s one food that you can’t stand, but everyone else appears to love?

‼️ As an aside, I don’t buy into the term ‘superfood’ either. ‘superfood’ is an overused (and unregulated!) marketing term, which often (but not always!) refers to a nutrient-dense food which is perceived to be beneficial for your health and wellbeing. Typically these foods have a unique and mystical backstory, about being found in the depths of the Amazonian rainforest or that they were a food of the Ancients, making them seem even more special and appealing. We all love something that sounds a bit different and exotic, right?

The thing is, and to put it bluntly, ALL whole foods contain a unique range of nutrients, phytonutrients and compounds which are beneficial (and ‘super’) for our health 🌈

Thanks to for the opportunity to try 5 super delicious and nutritious meals to celebrate the launch of their new Mediterranean Diet inspired menu.

Each week 5 new recipes are added to their subscription over summer - 2 x fish (including salmon, with a small surcharge), 2 x vegetarian & 1 x chicken.

The Med diet is one that research continues to support as being one which promotes optimal health, especially for our heart.

The Med diet focuses on whole foods, lots of non-starchy vege, some wholegrains, oily fish (hello omega 3!), plant-based proteins (eg lentils, chickpeas, beans etc), and healthy fats from the likes of olive oil, oily fish, nuts and seeds.

But it’s not all about food. The Med Diet is also a way of life - promoting enjoyment in preparing meals and eating together, slowing down and including regular movement.

Out of all the recipes I trialled, the pesto salmon was my fave. Not only was it super easy to put together, it was super fast too…..oh and it is was PACKED to the brim with SOOOOO much goodness!

What would be your fave out of the 5 pics shown?

Boy it’s been hot these past few weeks but are you remembering to keep yourselves extra hydrated to make up for it?
💧 Our bodies are made up of around 60-70% water, which we need for many of our body’s processes. If we get dehydrated, our mental and physical performance can suffer, and we may end up feeling a little bloated or constipated 💩 🙊
💧 So how do we keep hydrated? As a ballpark it is recommended that you have about 8 glasses of fluid (that includes not only water, but also the fluid found in things such as soups, smoothies, teas, coffee, other drinks and food) each day. However, during the warmer months or when you’re exercising you may need more. ..
🚽 You can tell if you need to drink more by checking the colour of your p*e. Ideally it should be slightly yellow / clear. If it’s darker and strong smelling, drink more!
💧 While water (and plain milk) are your best beverages of choice, some can find it a little ‘boring’. To spruce things up a bit, try keeping some chilled water in the fridge, favouring with frozen berries, fruit slices or herbs or using herbal tea infusions.
💧 to help remind me to drink plenty, I always keep a bottle of water with me - whether that be at my desk, in my car or on my bedside table. .
💦 what are your favourite ways to enjoy water?

Who’s with me?

We don’t need to be ‘perfect’ or go to extremes when it comes to healthy eating.

Healthy eating isn’t perfect, it is flexible.

We don’t need to cut out any foods, unless of course there’s a medically diagnosed reason to do so.

ALL foods can be part of a healthy eating pattern — it’s finding the right balance that works for you and your health that’s important.

By not labelling food as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ we remove the implied value (or guilt) that can often be associated with eating a certain food.

Healthy eating means more than simply eating healthy food. It is just as important to have a healthy relationship with food — one that is not fed out of fear of slip-ups or being virtuous, but is built on the enjoyment of eating and all that has to offer. ⠀

Because food is more than fuel or nutrition, it is there for enjoyment and celebrations!

It is one of the many simple pleasures life has to offer.

Have you ever read or heard that you should be avoiding acidic foods to keep your body's pH neutral and prevent things like nutrient loss or disease?

This is the concept of the Alkaline diet which has been around since the early 20th century.

In a nutshell, the alkaline diet is all about eating in a way that helps to optimize your body's natural pH balance by reducing the number of acid-forming foods we consume

These are foods like packet and processed foods, red meat, alcohol and coffee.

Along with this, the diet aims to increase foods that are alkaline-forming, like fresh leafy greens, carrots, avocado, beetroot, and quinoa.

The idea is that eating acidic foods makes it harder for the body the regulate its pH and makes us "more prone to disease, lethargy, poor skin, insomnia, mood swings and all
manner of ailments associated with a body that is laden with stress."

The good thing is that there's not much truth behind this concept. Our body is designed to maintain the pH of the blood in a narrow range (7.35-7.45) no matter what the pH
of our food is.

Yes, there are acidic foods that we should be consuming in moderation like sugary drinks and processed foods, but this is not because of the pH. It is more to do with high
levels of things like saturated fat and added sugar.

As with all diets which exclude food groups, there is also a risk of nutritional deficiency, as the alkaline diet can be low in: protein, calcium, iron and calories. This restrictive diet
can also promote an unhealthy relationship with food.

Let’s ditch food frustration & confusion once and for all!

Are you confused about all the conflicting nutrition advice and fed up with feeling guilty about the food you eat?

Then let’s clear up the confusion and bring back the enjoyment of food!

There is SO much misinformation around about what to eat. With the internet and social media being so unregulated, anyone these days can give nutrition advice. The reality is, not all that advice is based on robust scientific-evidence, which is why there can appear to be so many mixed messages out there about what to eat.

The diet industry is built on making you feel like nutrition is complicated and that you need a quick fix (ie their product!) in order to be healthy.
