As food companies start to catch on to the value of ‘organic’ to the bottom line of their business, some very dubious ingredients are sliping through the ‘certified organic’ loopholes. This fantastic article by nutrition geek Cyndi Lovetto (love that brain of yours!), takes a closer look at this phenomenon, so once again, you, the consumer, can make an informed decision. As she states - and I wholeheartedly agree - buying real food single organic ingredients and making your own meals is always going to be the easiest way to know what your eating. But I get that convenience foods have their place occasionally. So empower yourself with knowledge, and always read the ingredient list, not the marketing hoo haa. Yes I said hoo haa… as my mind can not find the words today!

Cyndi O'Meara takes an indepth look at organic certification and explains that, just because a food is certified organic, it does not mean that it is healthy for you.

regardless of whether you are pro or anti vaxx (of which I am not going to discuss here), I believe ultimately it is an individual, or parents right to choose. The important thing is that scientifically sound, unbiased information on both sides of the arguement is delivered to the public in a way that is easy to understand, so that they can decide their path in healthcare. Shouldn’t this be the way for any decision in healthcare?

Sweden has banned mandatory vaccinations, citing “serious health concerns” and the fact they violate a citizen’s constitutional rights to choose their own healthcare. The Swedish Riksdag (parliament) rejected seven motions on May 10 that would have enshrined forced vaccinations into law, stati...

Toxic flowers?: These are local organic beauties picked up from 6 days ago cradled in a beautiful vase from . But have you ever considered what you’re breathing in with most seemingly angelic bunches of flowers? A recent study of florists showed 111 chemicals (mostly insecticides and fungicides) detected on their gloves after just 4-6 hours handling flowers. Some substances we estimated to cause an exposure 4 times higher than the Acceptable Operator Exposure Level. And although this is a florist specific situation, it is known that the home can be a huge area of toxin exposure, so I personally don’t want to add to it! That’s why I seek out organic. Here’s just a few other easy ways to improve the health of your home: keep it well ventilated, consider buying second hand furniture older than 6 mths that has done its ‘off gassing’’ of flame retardants etc, have indoor plants, diffuse essential oils, buy organic flowers, turn the wifi and appliances off at night, and invest in an air purifyer. What do you do to make your home a health haven?

This is why I refer to myself as a ‘recovering Dietitian’. I spent 5 1/2 years at uni excited at the prospect of helping people live healthier, more fulfilling lives, not to feed a bunch of bu****it funded by large food corporations which is in essence killing the health of many kiwis. I know many Dietitians who have dropped the ‘title’ because they have switched on to what is happening. This is an Australian video, but the same goes on here. Please watch, so that you can start to think critically about the information you are fed.

I have never/would never EVER tell a friend who is genuinely struggling to reduce their alcohol consumption, that they are “pathetic”, have “no will power”, and “I’m surprised your partner hasn’t left you” when they fall short of the mark, not once, but many times over....
Yet I’ve used these words against myself - and a thousand times worse - again and again...

I believe thoughts become things. For me, this self-abuse manifested in even more catastrophic (I’m talking black-out material) episodes of binge drinking.... and subsequently more vicious verbal attacks... (repeat verse and chorus with greater intensity...)

We are not perfect, we all fall. It’s about learning to observe the thoughts and beliefs that lead to the behaviour with curiosity rather than judgement, so we can uncover those that are not serving us, and slowly learn new ways to think, find new beliefs that serve us, and learn to anchor our visualised ideal outcome with elevated emotions like joy, love, and excitement, so that our biology believes we’ve already achieved it.

We will fall. Possibly many, many times over. I think that’s part of the human experience. But please, please, pretty please, learn to speak to yourself with the kindest possible words your closest friend would utter. And trust you’ve got this, wherever you are on your roller coaster journey.
I believe in you xx

Self healing through daily meditation:

Like many, I’ve tried meditation, but never consistently enough to make a profound difference. And it’s always when we need it most that we prioritise our time elsewhere. Dr Joe Dispenza’s book ‘You are the Placebo’ has really elevated my perception of meditation through his profound scientific research. And I have to say, that only 4 days in, meditating an hour a day, that my fatigue, brain fog and mental outlook is improving.
But the only way to truly experience transformation is to keep practicing right!

Dr Joe Dispenza on Spontaneous Remissions:

“I found that there were 4 things that were common among every person who had a spontaneous remission,

1.The first thing was that every person accepted and believed, that there was a divine intelligence running the body.

2. The second thing is that they understood that their thoughts, actually contributed to their disease.

3. The third thing was that they decided that in order to break their thinking process, they had to reinvent themselves by thinking who they wanted to become. And as they started to think of the possibilities, their brain began to change.

4. The fourth thing was that they spent long moments with themselves (thinking about what they wanted to become). They were so involved in what they were thinking about, that they lost track of time and space.”

Fermented foods: it’s a bit of trial and error at times! Explosions, over-fermented alcoholic messes, too runny... But when you finally get the formula right, sensational!! Today’s brekkie: divinely creamy coconut yoghurt, topped with fermented mango, lime and vanilla purée, superfoods raw cacao nibs, organic ginger and cinnamon.

FYI: The coconut yoghurt was made with Ayam brand coconut cream and coconut yoghurt starter (available at www.kulturedwellness.com.au).
I fermented .organic frozern mango with coconut kefir I made from kefir starter and coconut water, then blended with fresh lime juice and vanilla pod seeds.

"Once you choose hope, anything is possible." — Christopher Reeve
Great words to ponder today, and interesting timing considering I am reading “You are the Placebo” by Dr Joe Dispenza - a man who refused surgery to have a 12” rod inserted into his spine, to instead heal his 6 broken vertebrae (cycle vs car) through the power of thought. Dr Dispenza has spent the last 30 years practically and scientifically showing how we can be the source of our healing. Amazing read. Now the difficult - but most rewarding part - daily practice.

an end of season soup to soothe the gut: I slow cooked season greens - asparagus, broccoli, bok choy, fennel bulb, coriander, courgette - in organic bone broth and curry powder, then added several big dollops of coconut oil and plain coconut yoghurt (after letting cool slightly so as not to kill the good bugs!) and blitzed in the stainless steel and glass blender. Topped with kale chips baked in coconut oil, salt and garlic. Delicious, and 2 more serves left in the fridge.

Hi, my name’s Marnie, and I’m an Ambivert....

I’ve always struggled with questions around introversion and extroversion, as I know I’m a bit both. Hence why I get frustrated when ‘analysts’ try and place me in a ‘box’, as the leaning is always marginal, and the outcome highly dependant on the test. Well apparently we have our very own ‘box’ now 😝. Anyone else in it with me??

how beautiful do these nasturtium flowers look on a fresh salad. A local grower popped them in the bag of spinach I bought from . What a nice surprise! Nasturtium flowers have a slightly spicy flavour with a mustard like aroma, so are the perfect addition to a salad. They also pack a nutritional punch with their high levels of vitamin C and phenols - powerful antioxidants that help protect our cells against free radical damage. I think they also enhance the psychological enjoyment of a meal with their beauty ❤️🌸

Perfume or ‘eau de toxin’?
Whilst the ancient art of perfumery involved solely plants, the vast majority of todays ‘perfumes’ or ‘fragrances’ contain an average of 14 synthetic substances (from around 3000 possibilities) and they’re not required to list them. The effects of these chemicals can be short-term - breathing issues, headaches, nausea and brain fog - or potentially more sinister, with some linked to cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders and allergies. Many are also endocrine disruptors - compounds that meddle with our delicately balanced hormonal system - so can trigger weight gain. We affectionately call these ‘chemical calories’. My suggestion is to seek out organic, natural fragrances based on essential oils and/or plant extracts, or learn to blend your own with carrier oil and organic essential oils. I love the newly released 5 pack of rollerblends by (available at https://twenty8.co.nz/product/essential-synergy-roller-blend-collection/). They’re also super slim, so you can easily carry several in your handbag to change at a whim.

This is Snoop. That’s right, Snoop dog. Snoop pretty much owns Omaha beach. He takes himself for runs up and down the beach every day - with or without his mum - sprinting through the shallow ripples, then stopping to lie flat as a pancake, with stick nearby, trying to lure you in. And you’re one tough cookie if you can walk past those beautiful brown begging eyes without throwing his stick.
He’s all about living in the moment, being active, community, going barefoot, and having fun. I reakon we should all be more like Snoop. He rocks. Feel free to post your best Snoop impression. There’ll be no prizes, but we’ll all have a laugh, and that’s important too 😍🤗.

after dealing with hair loss through high testosterone (as an athlete), and more recently low thyroid, I’ve been on a mission to decrease loss, increase growth, and reduce damage from heat styling without the use of chemicals. Massaging rosemary essential oil with twenty8 massage carrier oil into the scalp at night has made a huge difference, as has supplementing silica and biotin. I’ve also stopped using straighteners (though have steam straighteners on order for special occasions), and wanted to find a solution to stop using a blow dryer. Having very fine hair and cowlicks makes this difficult, as my hair just goes limp and frizzy when left to dry naturally, but I’ve recently started using this amazing product. And while my hair may look a little crazy for office situations, I think it’s fitting for our lifestyle by the beach, and saves a massive amount of time and damage. All natural and organic ingredients (swipe left), and seems to bump up the natural wave in my hair. Awesome for summer holidays!.
