The Northland team has a very exciting announcement...we are welcoming not just one, but TWO new music therapists to our regional team in Tai Tōkerau!✨

Earlier this week we introduced Kathryn, and today we welcome Rory Attwell to the team!

Rory joins us from the UK, bringing a wealth of experience from his years in the music industry and as a registered music therapist in SEND schools in London.
Rory is not new to Aotearoa, he previously toured here with a band and is thrilled to return, this time calling Whangārei home.💛

It is such a pleasure to welcome these two taonga as they bring fresh energy, creativity, and new insights to the mahi in Northland. Rory and Kathryn are working with clients through the regional centre in Whangārei, in the community, and travelling weekly to Kaikohe to support kura in the Mid-North. They are embracing the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture of Tai Tōkerau, engaging in whakawhanaungatanga every day. Kathryn and Rory look forward to working alongside our team in Northland and expanding the services available in playful, creative, and meaningful ways.🎶🧡

We are thrilled to welcome our newest registered music therapist, Kathryn Santiago, to our regional team in Tai Tōkerau! Originally from South Carolina and Georgia, USA, Kathryn is now happily settling just outside of Whangārei and working alongside Emily and Jonathan, who she first met years ago at university in North Carolina (what a small world!)🌏

Kathryn brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her music therapy practice: from starting the first music therapy program in the Tennessee Department of Corrections, to supervising music therapy students, and facilitating groups for people to explore identity, connection, and emotional expression.

Kathryn is an incredible singer and performer as well, having performed extensively throughout the U.S. in theater performances, choral ensembles, and R&B, soul, and funk bands.🎤🎸

When she’s not in the therapy room, Kathryn loves writing her own music, hiking, and spending time with friends and community.

Swipe to see a very happy Northland team as they are reunited with Kathryn and welcome her to beautiful Whangārei☺️➡️

P.S. Watch this space for another exciting announcement from our Northland team on Friday... 👀

👉👉Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre's Chris O’Connor delivers weekly music therapy sessions at Auckland Prison and says the benefits for all participants are wide-ranging. He'd would like to see music therapy used in prisons as a core component of rehabilitation and says there’s a wealth of international evidence about its benefits for people in prison.

👉👉“The men often use music to express their loss at being separated from loved ones and their remorse for past actions, as well as to articulate aspirations for life beyond prison.”

Changing Lives Through Music

The Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre was established in March 2004 by singer and songwriter Hinewehi Mohi who named it after her daughter Hineraukatauri who has severe cerebral palsy. Hineraukatauri, and thousands of other New Zealanders, have found a way to express themselves through music therapy, at the Centre named after her.

Music therapy is the planned use of music to assist in the healing and growth of people with emotional, intellectual, physical or social challenges. Music therapy at Raukatauri is delivered by our Registered Music Therapists via a clinical practice rooted in the humanistic model of music therapy which recognizes each individual’s uniqueness and worth.

Our clients have a range of needs, including cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome, traumatic brain injuries, mental health disorders, dementia, bereavement and exposure to abuse and neglect. Music therapy allows them to express themselves, develop independence, engage with others and develop meaningful relationships. It provides a vehicle for communication, participation and interaction and reduces our client’s sense of isolation within their immediate and wider communities.

Our mission, as New Zealand’s only music therapy centre, is to offer a quality, accessible music therapy service to all people, whatever their needs. Our services managed from our base in Grey Lynn, Auckland. Whilst many of our sessions are delivered here in Grey Lynn, to cater to growing demand we have expanded across Auckland and currently operate five satellites in the region – making music therapy accessible in places such as Pukekohe, Orewa, Titirangi and Otara. We also deliver outreach programmes in partnership with over 15 schools and organisations, allowing children and adults to receive music therapy directly in their classrooms, group homes and rehabilitation units. In June 2018 we undertook our most significant venture since we first opened our doors when we launched our first Regional Centre in Hawke’s Bay, and in March 2019 we opened a second Regional Centre in Whangarei.
