🌟 Understanding Selective Mutism 🌟

Selective Mutism (SM) is an anxiety disorder where a child is unable to speak in certain social situations, like school or public places, despite being able to speak comfortably at home with close family. It's more than just shyness—it's a real challenge that can impact a child's social and academic life. 💬❌

🧠 What is Selective Mutism?
Selective Mutism is not a choice; it's a response to overwhelming anxiety. Children with SM want to speak but feel physically unable to do so in specific settings. Recognising the signs early and seeking support can make a significant difference.

📌 Signs of Selective Mutism:

Consistent inability to speak in certain settings despite speaking in others.
Use of nonverbal communication (e.g., nodding, pointing).
Physical symptoms of anxiety (e.g., fidgeting, avoiding eye contact).

🎯 How WE Can Help

🟡 We create a safe, supportive and understanding atmosphere where the child feels comfortable and secure.

🟡 We slowly introduce the child to speaking in low-pressure settings. Start with familiar people and gradually expand to less familiar ones.

🟡 Celebrate small victories and encourage efforts without pressure or frustration.

Our Speech therapists and psychologists can offer specialised strategies and interventions tailored to each child's unique needs.

💡 How You can Help Your Child

🟡 Use visual aids and nonverbal communication to facilitate understanding and expression.
🟡 Encourage social interactions through playdates or group activities in a relaxed setting.
🟡 Maintain a routine to provide a sense of stability and predictability.

🌈 Remember: Patience and empathy are key. Progress may be slow, but every step forward is one in the right direction. Support and empowerment is what helps our little ones to find their voice! 💖

It is our ability to coregulate that has the greatest effect on our kids ability to regulate.

When we share our calm with our children they find a place to rest and feel safe to express what needs expressed which then leads to their own experience of regulation.

The research is clear, there are endless benefits to shared reading. The following are some great reasons to read to your child more:

📚 While everyday conversations are important for language development, the language used in books is richer and more varied. This means that a child who is read to frequently is exposed to a wider vocabulary than those who aren't.

📚 The simple act of a parent reading with a baby or toddler promotes the development of many early literacy skills such as:

❤ alphabet knowledge
❤ vocabulary
❤ paying attention
❤ listening ability,

📚 Books also provide social emotional benefits. They provide children with the opportunity to learn about themselves and others. Books can be used to help children cope with a variety of difficult feelings and transitions.

The quantity and quality of the early language children experience has significant implications for a child's development. So, if your wondering whether to pick up a book read know that shared reading, between parents/whānau and child, is one of the best ways to support this.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder which makes it difficult for children to inhibit their spontaneous responses—responses that can involve everything from movement to speech to attentiveness.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🤷🏽‍♂️ We all know kids don't appear to hear you or cant follow an instruction, can't sit still no matter how involved they are in an activity, or who blurt out inappropriate comments at inappropriate times, day dream allot or don't appear in the room! Sometimes these behaviours can be thought of as "naughty" or "disruptive" and children can easily be labeled. 🤷‍♀️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❤But these children are also often super inventive, and energetic and motivated, flexible and adaptable too!❤⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👨‍⚕️ 👩🏽‍⚕️ADHD can be difficult to identify because it can seem like "normal kids behaviour".⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Also its a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to what you could see! 👩🏼‍👨🏿‍⚕️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are a few things you might see:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🙇Have trouble staying focused; be easily distracted or get bored with a task before it’s completed.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👂Appear not to listen when spoken to and have difficulty remembering things and following instructions.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🧑🏽‍🏫 Have trouble staying organized and planning ahead.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🤷🏼‍♀️ Frequently lose or misplace items⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🗣 Intrude on other people’s conversations or games and talk excessively⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🙍🏽‍♂️Be unable to keep powerful emotions in check, resulting in angry outbursts or temper tantrum⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🤷🏻Constantly fidget and squirm.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🧗‍♂️Have difficulty sitting still, playing quietly, or relaxing, often running or climbing inappropriately.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🙍🏿‍♀️Have a quick temper or “short fuse.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Spatial neglect is one of the most interesting neurological deficits that can occur following a brain injury or stroke.

This neurological deficit can make it difficult for individuals to perceive and interact with one side of their environment and in assessment copied pictures can look like those shown here.

Patients affected by spatial neglect will struggle performing the activities of daily living, both basic and advanced.

Some examples of things patients may struggle with are:

⭐ Personal Hygiene: combing, shaving or putting make-up on one side of the face. The same thing happens with brushing one’s teeth.

⭐ Bathing: using soap or drying one side of the body.

⭐ Getting Dressed: having difficulties placing a garment with respect to one’s body or wearing a garment in only one side of the body.

⭐ Eating: scooping food from one half of a dish and not finding those elements that are on the affected side.

⭐ Using Public Transport: having problems to understand a bus or train timetable and difficulties orienting oneself or getting down at the desired stop.

At Dynamic Developments we help clients with spatial neglect reclaim their independence and confidence through indvidualised occupational therapy sessions.

Have you or a loved one experienced spatial neglect and would like some support get in touch with us via email or phone and we can support you on your journey. 💬❤️

What's the difference between occupational therapy and physical therapy?

While both occupations works with patients holistically and often as a multidisciplinary team it could be said that PT is more about helping individuals get from point A to point B while OT is about helping individuals do things at point A and point B - but as this diagram shows there is a lot of overlap in the services and support both professions provide.

The benefit of working with us at Dynamics Developments is our deeply knitted multi-disciplinary team which includes occupational therapist and physiotherapists allows us to continue supporting you across all areas of your life and therapy to really drive home your goals and have you thriving.

🤔 Wondering how to help your child start vocalising?

Here are some effective strategies:

✨ Firstly ask: are they developmentally ready to begin vocalising.
✨ Model sounds: consistently demonstrate the sounds and words you want them to learn.
✨ Provide visual clues: use gestures like pointing or showing objects to link meaning to your vocalisations.
✨ Fun above everything else: make the process enjoyable and engaging!
✨ Keep it simple: focus on few specific vocalisations to practice at home each week.
