🌿Tihei Mauri Ora Programme – Week 5✨

Guest Speaker: Whaea Hera (Turuki Health)
Location: Turuki Health Care Aronui

Week 5 of the Tihei Mauri Ora Programme was a deeply moving and heartfelt session led by our respected guest speaker, Hera Tumai from Turuki Health Care - Aronui.

Our wāhine were privileged to sit within the wisdom and presence of a remarkable Kuia whose beauty, strength, resilience, and grace continue to inspire those around her. At 74 years old, Whaea Hera embodies mana wāhine in its truest form, carrying knowledge, humour, humility, and deep cultural wisdom that resonated throughout the room.

Whaea Hera shared powerful and deeply connected purākau, creating space for reflection, healing, and understanding through storytelling and lived experience.

Her kōrero reminded our wāhine:

Of the strength carried within whakapapa

The importance of resilience through hardship

The value of self-worth, dignity, and identity

That healing can be guided through wisdom passed down by our kuia and tūpuna

Alongside her kōrero, Whaea Hera also facilitated gentle tinana activities, encouraging wāhine to reconnect with movement, breath, and the importance of caring for the physical body as part of holistic wellbeing.

The energy within the space today was nurturing, grounding, and emotionally connected. The wāhine listened deeply, shared openly, and were reminded of the power that exists within intergenerational knowledge and connection.

Although several of our wāhine and their pēpi were unwell this week and unable to attend, their presence was still deeply felt within the whakaaro of the rōpū.

We extend love, strength, and gratitude to all of our wāhine and whānau currently recovering and holding space through sickness. Your wellbeing matters, and we look forward to being reunited again next Friday.

A heartfelt thank you to Sarah Tumai for gifting her time, wisdom, energy, and lived experience to our wāhine. Her presence reminded us all that true beauty lies not only in appearance, but in the strength, compassion, and wisdom a woman carries through life.

Week 5 of the Tihei Mauri Ora Programme was a powerful reminder of the importance of our kuia, our stories, and our collective healing journey.

Through purākau, movement, laughter, and connection, our wāhine were nurtured spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Even amidst illness and absence, the aroha within our rōpū remains strong.

To our wāhine and pēpi who are unwell, we send healing, strength, love, and gratitude until we meet again next Friday.

Tihei Mauri Ora.

Tihei Mauri Ora Programme

Maramataka🌗🌒🌓🌔

Week 3🌿✨

of the Tihei Mauri Ora Programme was centered on Maramataka, the Māori lunar calendar and its role in guiding wellbeing, awareness, and intentional living.

This session invited our wāhine to reconnect with the natural rhythms of the environment and understand how those rhythms can influence energy, emotions, decision-making, and healing. It was a deeply reflective and grounding experience that encouraged participants to slow down and observe the relationship between self and nature.

The purpose of this week was to introduce wāhine to the principles of Maramataka as a practical and spiritual tool for everyday life.

Through discussion and learning, participants explored:

The significance of lunar phases within Te Ao Māori

How energy shifts throughout the month

The importance of aligning actions with natural cycles

Ways to use Maramataka as a guide for wellbeing, planning, and self-care

This kaupapa supported wāhine in recognising that healing is not linear, it moves in cycles, much like the moon.

The session created meaningful opportunities for self-reflection and personal connection.

Wāhine engaged thoughtfully, sharing how understanding Maramataka gave language to emotional and energetic changes they have experienced in their own lives. For many, it offered reassurance that fluctuations in motivation, mood, and strength are part of a wider natural rhythm rather than personal failure.

The learning opened new perspectives around patience, balance, and the importance of honouring different seasons of life.

Maramataka provided participants with another culturally grounded framework to support their ongoing healing journey.

By reconnecting with ancestral knowledge, wāhine gained:

A stronger sense of identity and belonging

Practical strategies for regulating energy and expectations

A deeper understanding of balance in wellbeing

Confidence in using cultural tools to guide daily life

This week reinforced that healing can be strengthened through alignment with both tikanga and the natural world.

The Week 3 session highlighted the power of Indigenous knowledge systems in supporting recovery and personal transformation.

Our wāhine embraced the teachings of Maramataka with openness and curiosity, demonstrating a readiness to integrate these practices into their own journeys. Their willingness to learn and reflect continues to strengthen the collective wairua of the programme.

Week 3 was a deeply grounding and insightful session that expanded participants’ understanding of healing through the lens of Maramataka.

By reconnecting with lunar cycles and ancestral wisdom, wāhine were reminded that growth, rest, action, and reflection all have their rightful place. This knowledge empowers them to move forward with greater awareness, balance, and intention as they continue reclaiming their mana.
