Over the past 4 years, Nathan Freney has created Swallowtail Nursery, which focuses on people who are living with a disability.
🌱 The aim is to create opportunities and allow people to gain valuable life skills and enable them to find useful employment in the many businesses related to the horticultural and agricultural sectors.
🌱 Nathan is dedicated and passionate about getting the message out there for farmers and employers, who may not appreciate the skills that a person with a disability can offer, to the various roles in the workplace.
🌱 It has been widely reported that since Covid restrictions, there have been staff shortages, that given the opportunity by employers, could easily be filled by a person with a disability.
🌱 Employers need to be aware of the many benefits of employing a person with a disability within their business. You are missing out on gaining valuable staff, if you do not give them this opportunity.
🌱 This is why we have started Swallowtail Inclusion Program to get farmers to have people who are living with a disability, on their farms to help with day-to-day work.
🌱 The announcement of our new program with TAFE QLD Cert II in Horticulture “The Swallowtail Program”, gives the base to get any employee/student to find a job in the horticultural and agricultural sectors.
🌱 What makes this business unique and drives its success is the fact that Nathan himself has a disability, and knows first-hand the difficulties and challenges that training can present for this group. With a little bit of training, they will make a valuable addition to an inclusive workplace.
🌱 The one thing we have come across over many years, with people saying to Nathan “Why don’t the employers take a little bit more time to explain clearly what the task is, and also to check that they understand what is required.”
🌱 Nathan is fortunate to have the amazing support of the Swallowtail Nursery community to inspire him and ensure the growth of the business and to offer workshops to enable people with a disability to find meaningful employment within the agricultural and horticultural environment.
🌱 Nathan sincerely believes that having a disability should not make you feel excluded, judged, or discriminated against and that everyone deserves to be a valuable member of society and find meaningful employment.
