Last year’s adventure involved mental endurance and growth and today I got to walk the stage and claim the prize 🎓. Taking on Postgraduate study as my first ever foray into academia was ambitious, on top of a full time job, family, and working hard to take control of my diabetes management it was FULL ON! Hugest thank you to all those who supported me and helped me see this through ❤️ Big events like this sure bring out the diabetes anxiety, what you can’t see here is my concealed artificial pancreas, my stash of jellybeans, and me internally hoping my blood sugars remain stable.

Somehow I turned 38 this past weekend 😮🎂🎈. Super spoilt with a new mountain bike and shoes 🚴🏻‍♀️❤️. The best gift of all though was the experience of riding the Remutaka Incline with my family. We were even blessed with the most beautiful uncharacteristic Wellington day. Big shout out to my family and friends for making my birthday so special x

11 November 2023 - today I ran the 16km Taniwha trail run, raising over $900 for Diabetes NZ and promoting awareness.

😑 I was SO invested in proving WHAT I COULD achieve DESPITE living with T1D.

11 November 2024 - today I had my first HbA1c test since starting on the AAPS system with Medtrum nano pump and Libre 2 sensor. 50…FIFTY.. there is no other way to say it 🤯. In less than three months I am in control of T1D and out of harms reach.

🤯 Today I am invested in proving THAT I CAN successfully manage T1D.

If there was ever any question as to how life changing the decision to fund diabetes technology is, let my story be an example. I feel hope for the first time since being diagnosed 💫

Super cool Friday night out in South Wairarapa watching the massive Aurora storm. An amazing experience to be able to share with our kids.

🥳 IT IS HERE!! The start of a brighter future for the estimated 25,000 NZ’ders managing Type 1 diabetes everyday!!

Today it was my turn - I picked up my first prescription of funded continuous glucose monitors and I am feeling SO grateful.

💫 Firstly, I am grateful for the people who stood strong, worked so hard, shared stories and advocated for this massive life changing win for our community. Your determination is so so appreciated by all of us.
💫 I am grateful for my brilliant endocrinologist who worked hard to get my Special Authorisation through so damn quick and I am grateful for the pharmacy who were stocked and ready to roll the day after funding was implemented.
💫 I am so grateful for the positive impact this is going to have on my life and the lives of all of those in our community!

I stumbled across who have the coolest selection of pump and CGM accessories right here in NZ. After browsing the site FOREVER I managed to pick out a few favourites. There are different types of tape to choose from so I got a few of each to test out. My pump feels SUPER secure! Service was ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ they arrived super fast! Looking forward to having some fun with my robot parts!

Why TECH and why NOW?

Four years of denial, reliance on distraction techniques and a never ending cycle of ‘betes burnout. That’s the crux of it.

Reflection is a powerful tool….which led me to a relisation 💡 This seems embarrassingly simple, like duh - why not just do that from the start?!

Truth is, I never accepted my diagnoses, I was still mad. I desperately tried too…then I slipped into a pattern of distraction. Constantly setting and achieving goals to spite it. Then I felt like a fraud.

While I was sharing my achievements and adventures, inside I was sick. I was disassociating with diabetes and focussing on everything else.

But, it never went away, no matter what I achieved, I still have a chronic disease that is a very REAL threat to my health, to my LIFE.

Now I’m ready, and I’m invested. The most important achievement in my LIFE will be how I manage my T1D.

Reflecting on today’s announcement 📢

I posted this photo on the first day of a trial CGM that I was given by my the hospital team. This was April 2021 - almost a year into my journey.

Since then I can probably count the number of times I’ve worn a CGM on both hands.

Despite all that I achieved in spite of it, despite how much I thought I had accepted it, I loathed having to live with Type 1, and I sure as hell didn’t want to spend money on it.

What wearing a CGM became for me was the LIFELINE that I reached out for to pull myself out of BURNOUT 🛟

When all the finger pricking and static numbers and chasing targets overwhelmed me, a CGM took some of that load off, the visual of my levels on a graph held me accountable. It was that breath of air I desperately needed when I was suffocating.

I am SO GRATEFUL that EVERYONE living with Type One Diabetes in NEW ZEALAND will now have access to a LIFELINE 🛟

From 0 to Loopy 🤪 in 6 weeks…

Last night I closed the loop! AAPS is now running the show - and absolutely smashing it 👊🏻

🚫 I am not a tech person, at times I felt WAY out of my depth and had serious doubts about whether I was capable of engaging with this level of tech.

But I did. And I am testament to anyone else in my shoes who might be letting the same doubt hold them back - you’ve SO got this!

So far AAPS is proving to be SUPER smart 💫🧠 and WAY better at managing my diabetes than I am. The amount of work it took for a day like this with finger pricks and multiple daily injections was horrendous.

I appreciate how lucky I am to have the opportunity to have access to and to be able to experience this technology.

There will much to re-learn on this journey, part of that feels very overwhelming, but I reassure myself that I’m re-learning it for a happier and healthier future! 💫

PUMP START day!!

Yesterday was pump start day 💫 I have been using the Medtrum Nano patch pump with AAPS in Low Glucose Suspend mode for over 24 hours now I am LOVING it ❤️ the next step will be to completely close the loop!!

💫 Things that are different (read amazing and life changing)

💉 No more injections - I can’t even feel the insulin delivery via the pump.
⏰ No more Lantus alarm. For four years an alarm has sounded once a day to remind me to inject my background insulin.
📍No more finger pricks (well some just to check CGM accuracy).
📉 Flash Glucose Monitor is now in Continous Glucose Monitor mode - I can view my BS levels constantly.
🧮 No more math - AAPS has an inbuilt calculator that figures the carbs and corrections out for me.
🛑 AAPS will suspend insulin delivery that will send me low.
〰️ Dosing through the pump frequently instead of the large infrequent doses with multiple daily injections means more stable glucose levels.

I am and will always be extremely grateful to be able to access this amazing technology ❤️ Thank you from the very depths of my heart to all of those involved, those who have pushed me, supported me and encouraged me to embark on this journey.

It was SNOW problem really…we made it home eventually ❄️❄️❄️
Our exit from Wanaka wasn’t quite quick enough, it started snowing as we left camp and by the time we arrived at Lindis Pass it was well and truely painted white!! The hazardous driving conditions - we caught up with the snow plow - meant we were seriously pushing it to return the camper in Christchurch by closing.
Fortunately, work were accomodating, my awesome parents graciously accepted care of the kids for the night, and unbeknownst to us we had already paid a minimum five day hire on our camper, so only had to pay for the extra insurance…and flight changes etc.
Forced to pick a camp for the night we were back to the beautiful lakesedgetekapo.
I adore the snow, much like a kid at Christmas I get SUPER excited…can you tell? 🤷🏻‍♀️
