Lots of time, without removing the layers of plaque and food, we never find out the cavities and cracks hiding underneath. But many aged care residents especially those with dementia don’t recognise the early warning signs until the infection has spread beyond the tooth and caused more serious health concerns.

Many people assume oral health is completely individual, but the bacteria responsible for tooth decay and gum disease can actually be shared through saliva. This means a partner’s oral health can influence yours through activities like kissing or sharing utensils.

Sugar-free drinks aren’t necessarily tooth-friendly. While they don’t contain sugar, many are still highly acidic—such as sparkling water, diet soda, citrus drinks, fruit tea, and wine. Frequent exposure to acid can gradually wear away enamel.

Your gums cover a surprisingly large surface area in your mouth. If flattened out, the gum tissue would roughly equal the size of the palm of your hand. When gums are inflamed, that represents a significant area of chronic inflammation. Imagine a bleeding pimple the size of your palm on your face, what would you do about it?

After acidic drinks like juice or wine, it’s best to wait about 30 minutes before brushing. Acid temporarily softens enamel, and brushing immediately can cause additional wear. Saliva needs time to neutralise the acid first.

Not all cavities need fillings right away. In the earliest stage, tooth decay can sometimes be stabilised or reversed with fluoride, diet changes, and good oral hygiene. Once the decay progresses deeper into the tooth, however, a filling becomes necessary.

After seeing one of my patients this week, I needed to write. Some stories do not leave you quietly.

Dementia is a cruel, disorienting disease. It slowly reshapes memory, identity, and independence in ways that feel deeply unfair. As clinicians, we cannot reverse it. As families, we cannot reason it away. But we can still choose how we show up.

I hope medicine continues to move forward in prevention and treatment. In the meantime, I hope those living with dementia continue to be loved, seen, and cared for with dignity. Even when memories fade, comfort still matters. Presence still matters.

Who doesn’t like the feeling of having clean teeth? 🦷 ✨
I still remember first time getting a hygiene treatment done and I was in disbelief how different it felt! Wow my teeth had more gaps than I knew 😂

A new report based on interviews with nurses and caregivers across the country has described a “crisis” in aged care homes marked by missed care and outright neglect, driven largely by staffing shortages and limited time to provide basic supports. What does that mean for oral care? Learn more: https://wix.to/j9ELDYG

Oral health is a fundamental part of overall wellbeing. For older adults living in rest homes, regular dental hygiene care plays a vital role in comfort, nutrition, dignity, and quality of life. Yet it is often overlooked or deprioritised. This isn’t due to neglect or lack of dedication from careg...

Think of your gums as a high-tech sensor. Brushing and flossing keeps the sensor clean, but the “data” it’s reading—your hormones—is what triggers the alarm (inflammation). To stay healthy, you have to manage both the sensor and the system behind it.

Here’s a post about me, the human behind Wholesome Smiles🧡
Besides dentistry, there’s many things that lights up my life.

1. I started learning to sew and fell in a hole of buying beautiful fabrics. I’m planning to make a shirt and a 50s dress during the xmas break!

2. I started reading more this year too. And my favourite book of the year so far is Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys. Made me cry so much but it was a beautiful story.

3. The food I miss most right now is Xi’an’s buckwheat noodles

4. I used to hate running but I ran my first 5k race this year at the Kapiti half marathon

5. My daily source of joy: Milo 🐱 and Noodle 🐶
