About Homeopathy
Homeopathy is an effective therapy and scientific system of medicine that gently stimulates the natural tendency of your body to heal itself. It recognizes your individuality and that each person has their own unique way of expressing dis-ease through physical as well as mental and emotional symptoms. Let’s go back to the beginning...
The system of Homeopathy was developed over
200 years ago by a German physician Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), when in his search to improve the crude medical practices of the day, he decided to experiment on himself. He took a standard treatment for Malaria (Cinchona bark, where quinine comes from) to see what would happen… even although he didn’t have Malaria.
…he experienced the symptoms of the disease making the discovery that, in a healthy person, a substance can produce the symptoms intended to cure the sick. Hahnemann further discovered that when the symptoms produced by a medicine closely match the symptoms experienced by a sick person and the corresponding remedy was given the patient got better; in other words ‘Like cures like’ or, in Latin ‘Similia Similibus Curantur’
Hahnemann went on to do many more experiments with remedies made from plant, animal and mineral origin. His concise scientific methods led him to discover that diluting then succusing (vigorously shaking) each successive dilution produced a remedy that was, not only more activated, but also more effective than before. Hahnemann’s methods have been expanded on over the years by other leading Homeopaths.
•What are remedies? Homeopathic remedies generally come as medicated lactose pillules or in a medicated liquid form. Sometimes you may be given just one dose (2-3 pillules) to take however you will be given clear instructions about dose; how and when to take the remedy and on their storage. In New Zealand specialized pharmacies scientifically prepare quality homeopathic remedies, these are pharmaceutically monitored which means that a particular potency is always repeatable to maintain a consistent standard.
•What happens when I see a Homeopath? Our bodies strive to maintain equilibrium; therefore our health is an ever changing dynamic process, one that involves the active participation of you the client. This means that we work together to understand and address the underlying reasons for ill health whether that is on a physical, mental or emotional level. As a Homeopathic practitioner I will want to know all about you and what makes you the unique person you are. Any seemingly minor or unimportant symptom may be of significance to me, so don’t be surprised if you are asked to report on your food preferences or your sleeping position!
•How long is a consultation? The first consultation is generally from one hour and thirty minutes to two hours long, there may be occasions when an additional consultation is required before a prescription can be made.
•Follow up consultations:
are at least thirty minutes or up to one hour, the frequency of these varies from person to person depending on the needs of the individual. Follow ups are important to monitor progress.
•What if I already take medication? Homeopathy supports any other work that you are doing with your Doctor/Specialist however it is important for me to know of other medicines you may be taking, as this must be considered when prescribing. Please do NOT take yourself off drugs that your Doctor/Specialist has prescribed without consulting them first.
•What happens after I take the remedy? Homeopathy works by stimulating your body to start healing itself. It is not unusual to feel tired and need to sleep after a remedy. You may also get a discharge such as a ‘cold’ or a heavy period. Sometimes old symptoms may briefly come back. If you are unsure about what is happening please contact me. Confidentiality
ALL of the information you give during a consultation is confidential and your notes are kept secure. Under the Privacy Act your notes are kept for ten years and then destroyed. As a professional Homeopath I have a supervisor this sometimes necessitates that I share general details about cases. Personal details are changed so your identity remains anonymous. When you first come for your consultation you are asked to fill out and sign a consent form for your details to be used in the above way. And now ...what about me?
