Youths Empowerment by Daulo Commodity Cooperative Society Ltd ( DCCS )

DCCSL promotes and involves youth to participate in its community lead initiatives such as tree planting, conservation and ecotourism programmes, to allow for full community participation and leave no one behind strategy.

Bryan Aviro Inapero is a shining star for PNG.

There is increasing international pull on youths to participate meaningfully for climate change and sustainability actions.

Locally, Bryan is performing extremely well in the tree planting initiative by DCCSL and had planted several hundred trees and continue to plant today and plan to plant more ,moving forward.

18 years old Bryan is in his 10th grade at Daulo Secondary School in Daulo District , EHP , PNG . He started planting tree in 2020.

He is motivated by the advocates for fighting climate change by his father , Mr. Jerry Aviro, who is a strong advocate for community development and climate change actions.

Bryan supplied seedlings from the nursery to his school mates at Daulo Secondary.

He also advocates for more tree planting exercise by youths of his age.

He believed that planting tree is a honourable thing to do not because to only address climate change effects but it is creating the natural resource wealth for future generations.

Coffee Project by Daulo Commodity Cooperative Society Ltd (DCCSL) and Coffee Industry Cooperation ( CIC).

Coffee is a key cash crop in EHP that contributes to generate revenue for the government BUT more importantly it financially supports the vast rural populace to meet school fee needs, hospital bills , household needs and also to support cultural obligations and creat wealth.

Village coffee farmers under DCCSL are now fortunate to expand coffee plantations to increase their productions, through their lead development partner , CIC.

Primarily, ground work had already began and now the nursery work is progressively moving with the support directly provided by CIC officers onsite under the coordination of the lead farmer, Mr. Jonathan Inapelo
Coffee farmers at Anegu/Keremu Community are aiming for extensive coffee productions in the near future in a more sustainable approach.

CIC is one of DCCSL's lead development partner and the partnership is growing strong today with the promising future.

DCCSL promotes and practices eco-friendly and climate smart agriculture such as crop diversification.

Daulo Commodity Cooperative Society Ltd / DCCSL is one of the outstanding local initiatives in Eastern Highlands and PNG.

Over the last almost seven years and still continue today and also given the promising future prospects of the initiative , DCCSL management continue to undertake strategic and most advanced approaches to work with the village farmers and the key development partners to boost crop diversification and sustainable management of the environment to create more avenues to boost local cash flow situations in the Upper Asaro LLG.

Given the increase population growth that puts more pressures on the use of limited land such as for village settlements and farming, etc. DCCSL promotes and practices sustainable inclusive development growth where the limited land is effectively utilized to provide more income for the village farmers from various crops while soil fertility and the environment is sustainably managed.

Sustainable land use management/ Environment Management + Crop Diversification = Increase Income generation for the villager farmers= Financial freedom +Poverty Reduction.

Sustainable Community Forestry & Climate Change for Daulo Commodity Cooperative Society Ltd by Partners with Melanesians.

Partners with Melanesians (PwM) is one of the most performing and experienced national environment NGOs that specialises in conservation, natural resource management, community sustainable development and climate change programmes in PNG.

In 2018, DCCSL linked PwM and a survey was made to understand tree planting/reforestation potential. Based on the recommendation made from the survey , PwM returned again around 2021 with the Incentive Fund from PNGAus Partnership through the project called " Sustainable Approach to Community Forestry & Climate Change Impacts in Eastern Highlands and Simbu Province", to support DCCSL's tree farmers , local eco-warriors and climate change activists in their fight to restore degraded landscapes, reforest deforested land, protect natural forest and organically improve soil nutrients. It is resulted that a permanent forest nursery was setup, seedlings were supplied and planted.

Today, I found out that trees are growing, tree covers are improved, new birds are arrived and lived, landslide areas are covered with trees, gardening areas are covered with leguminous trees, etc. Effects of climate change is already addressed through the process of photosynthesis. The fight by local eco-warriors and climate change activists as lead by Jerry has impactful results at a continuous phase.

Mr. Jerry Aviro and his team is a true warrior in the sustainability and climate change space in his community at Upper Asaro LLG , Daulo District , EHP.

Tree planting has social , ecological & economical benefits but DCCSL only advocates for ecological benefits.

PwM's intervention was through the efforts put by former Executive Officer & senior forestry officer, Chief Kenn Mondiai, and his team.

I personally recognized PwM's support actually boosted DCCSL 's local tree planting initiative.

Sustainable Harvesting of Tree Encourage By Daulo Commodity Cooperative Society Ltd (DCCSL )

Tree is a commodity and used for commercial purposes . It is farmed but also it is found naturally abundance in the forest in PNG.

Conservation initiatives cannot suppress the demand for timber. Housing is essential for the repid population growth although income earning for individuals and families is also important to improve livelihoods.

DCCSL STRONGLY advocates & encourages tree farmers to sustainably harvest the trees at small scale based on the following Moto: Cut 1- plant 5.

The Moto means , when cutting a matured tree, 5 new seedlings must be planted for replacement and this sustainability approach is still part of the conservation management plans . Simple!

But DCCSL STRONGLY discourages illegal, unsustainable and extensive cutting down of trees from especially the natural forest at Upper Asaro LLG, Daulo District and EHP.

DCCSL's Strategic Approach in managing the natural resources is progressing well. Mr .Jerry Aviro and DCCSL still leading the way. The future of their natural resources is guaranteed.

Proper land use plan at community level can potentially suppresses overuse, overexploitation and unsustainability issues of harvesting timbers and other demand natural resources.
