A plant nursery is the foundation of plant growth, development and maturity. Whether they be mangroves, palms, shrubs, flowering trees, timber trees, ornamental trees, fruit trees or food crops, all life regenerates from seeds and running a nursery is the basic and most significant approach to improving and restoring life of plants to further support the major food webs ecologically.

Here we have Brown Terminalia, Mandarin, Kwila and Rosewood seedlings thriving well in the green house. We may not see the outcome of these seedlings wherever they are planted but we know for sure they will add value to our planet as they grow.

But someone may ask, "How will the dead be raised? What kind of bodies will they have?" What a foolish question! When you put a seed into the ground, it doesn't grow into a plant unless it dies first. And what you put in the ground is not the plant that will grow, but only a bare seed of wheat or whatever you are planting. Then God gives it a body it wants to have. A different plant grows from each kind of seed. Similarly there are different kinds of flesh, one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish.

Brown Terminalia 🌱🎥

These are Brown Terminalia seedlings. Scientifically known as Terminalia brassii from the family Combretaceae. Okari and Talis trees are from this same family.

Brown Terminalia is also a major exportable hardwood in PNG.

Casia PNG Nursery is a project focused in propagating seedlings of native exportable hardwood tree species of PNG on a smaller scale to market. However this idea could enlighten the possibility of doing mass plantations of these species including Kwila and Rosewood for socio economic and environmental benefits into the country.

Plantations will reduce the trend of deforestation of our natural forests because there are no proper reforestation programs in place. Also, mass plantations may allow downstream processing of wood products within our shores to run effectively.

We transplanted some sweet Mandarin Orange (Citrus spp.) seedlings from the seed germination bed into poly bags on the date 11/07/23. 🌱🍊

This is more like an experiment to determine the time frame of seeds germination to maturity for planting.

Part of our work at Casia Nursery involves "SEED STUDY". We do seed studies and document especially on commercial tree species that we are currently raising.

Basically, our study involves all factors of the nursery work from Soil Preparation, Seeds Preparation & Germination, Seedling Growth & Mortality, Pest & Disease, Labour (Man hours) on different task, expenses etc. For instance, in soil preparation, we practically experiment what soil mixture or composition best suits which species because from experience; not ALL seeds favour the same soil mixture.

We are not only propagating seedlings at Casia Nursery but we are also keeping records, doing scientific research and documenting our work.

ROSEWOOD

Scientifically known as Pterocarpus indicus from the family Fabaceae, this legume plant grows into a 30-40 m height tree with termite resistant premium hardwood. Rosewood is a major exportable hardwood in PNG by the trade name New Guinea Rosewood.

It grows best in the lowland areas of South East Asia and in PNG it is commonly distributed throughout Morobe, West Sepik, East Sepik, Madang, Central, Miline Bay, Gulf and Oro.

Casia PNG Nursery aims to propagate seedlings of commercial native trees of PNG which are mostly sought after and logged in our natural forests. Through scientific research and seed studies, we hope to document our work on how to best raise these native seedlings for future references.
