We returned to Port Moresby on 8th October 2023, 2 weeks earlier than planned. We had at least 3 families that hosted us and a few other colleagues that visited us. The love and care we had was beyond what we expected. These families will always have a special place in our hearts, we can not repay all that they have done for us but we pray that God will shower His blessings upon them always. ❤❤❤

Summary and Update:

We admitted to Lake Macquarie Private Hospital, Newcastle on Monday 24th July. Underwent an Angiogram on Tuesday 25th and had a open heart valve replacement surgery on Wednesday 26th July.
ICU care from 26th July to Saturday 29th 1pm.
Physio and mobility commenced in ICU and continued till discharge on Thursday 3rd August 2023. Daily blood work up and xrays for first 4 days. I had my internal warfare and fears to battle with aside from ICU delirium and dsyarthmias but I can testify that My God never forsake me. Your prayers were all too powerful. 🙏🏽 I rest up now, allow more sternal healing before commencing cardiac rehabilitation in 3 weeks. I share with you a few pics of the week.

My strength comes from God but it wasn't all easy. I woke up enough by Thursday midday in ICU and heard 'We are getting you up now, are you ready to try walk?' My mind said No!!! But I heard myself say ok and my body went into automatic motion to get up off the bed the right way to avoid pressure on my chest. 'How are you feeling? Are you light headed?' Me: No, I'm ok.(automatic responses). That first walk, feet soo heavy and the feeling of all the tubes and drains stuck in me had me question if the surgery was the right thing to do. I felt so much pressure on my chest. I couldn't imagine coping with this feeling for many days. But I got through the walk. Early hours the next morning I went out of rhythm (heartbeat) at 4am. Monitor alarms went off, ICU experienced nurses set up a drip (amiodarone) called the doctor and I had no family by my side (hospital policy). I prayed ever so hard for my sons. By midday, Mum and Dad came by. I had my second walk, I couldn't believe it but it felt slightly better. Saturday midday, I transferred out of ICU with a few more tubes removed. Sunday I walked without the walking frame. On Sunday night, I prayed for an intercession from Blessed Petro ToRot. I asked God to settle my dysrythmias. Monday night there was hint of a fever starting but it a one off reading. Tuesday Doctor said I went back to sinus rhythm and would discharge by Thursday. Yes I am on medications still and feel better but I trust that God is the source of my recovery and ongoing rehabilitation because through out this time, my family and many more others have not stopped praying and upholding this journey. 🙏🏽 To God be the Glory.❤️

Lake Macquarie Private Hospital (Ramsey Health Care) is where we are.
On arrival into BNE we were accomodated by Nathan and Nancy Niaga and their lovely boys overnight. When we got to Newcastle, we were accommodated by Prof Ferguson and his wife Sue then by Dr Julie a Paediatrician who works aswell at John Hunter hospital. They all have overwhelmed us with their kindness and hospitality and made us feel blessed.

Yesterday after my angiogram (preop procedure), Leah (a wantok) who is a nurse working at LMPH for many years came by to introduce herself and opened up her home aswell to us.❤️

After which there was a stream of doctors prepping me for what to expect today. The Anaesthetist (who walked the kokoda trail back in the 80's as a medical student), the Intensivists and the Cardiothoracic surgeon ( who will travel to PNG possible November with the heart team). The physiotherapist came by to do my spirometry and went through what to expect to feel and be able to do post surgery. One of the intensivists popped by again this morning to reassure me all will be well, his phrase, I'll see you in ICU though you won't see me. 😊(He has said he is one of those assisting with MoPHA's ICU team) I'll eventually after surgery be woken up in ICU and extubated there. They'll get me on my feet before Im transferred out. Maybe in ICU 2 days before I'm back out to the ward and able to communicate. Thank you all for your continued support and prayers.🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️ I love you all, I go in at 1pm.

The hand of the Lord is still at work. Thank you Lord for the team you have assembled, I trust in you and know that today when I go in I will not be alone. All these was made possible through You my God. I love you and I adore you. Amen.🙏🏻🙏🏻

Goodnight and God bless to you all. An update to all who have supported in one way or another that we are now preparing to travel. In the last couple of months there has been no active fundraising but God had continued to bless us in ways beyond our own understanding. Thank you from our hearts, from my family to yours. 🙏🏻♥️❤️

😢😢. Felt your emotions there too Dr Chanoan as a parent. Thank you to the late Dr Leonard Kaupa and all the Papua New Guinean doctors involved to date. Thank you Operation Open Heart coordinator Russell Lee and Team. ♥️♥️♥️

In July 1996, I was a 13 year old breathless skinny 7th grader waiting at the Sir Buri Kidu Heart Institute with my parents Friday afternoon for the final assessment by the visiting specialist. I was diagnosed with Mitral valve stenosis in 1994 (Rheumatic Heart Disease). It was late afternoon when we were told we had to be in Goroka by that Sunday for surgery. Dad was a clerk and mum a secretary then at UPNG. It was the weekend and they had to find money for tickets. There were no mobiles, phone banking and online booking then. They sought out Mrs Hayfield, a Filipino Lecturer who became friends with mum and she assisted with tickets for Dad and I to fly out that Sunday. God bless her where ever she is today. 🙏🏽

I had my open heart surgery the next day - a mitral valvotomy where my very narrowed heart valve was widened to allow for more blood flow. Mum managed to fly in on the day of operation. I recovered well post surgery and returned to school a month later. My shortness of breath resolved and I started to gain weight.

God blessed me with two very strong resilient, loving and caring parents who have been my backbone throughout and whose faith have saved me many times.

In 2007 I graduated with a medical degree alongside my older (by 2 years) sister Cynthia with her degree in Commerce. It was a great family achievement, Mum and Dad threw us the biggest graduation party and we had significant relatives flown in from Wewak and Rabaul to celebrate with us. I had started my first year medical residency in Nonga General Hospital that year (2007), in August my sister was selected to undergo the same surgery by the OOH team. She was diagnosed at the end of her Grade 12. I received news late in the afternoon and early the next morning I turned up at the airport and bought my ticket for the first flight out. I slept in hospital with her before her surgery and when she came out of ICU. She recovered to go home but her symptoms weren't relieved.

In 2008 I self transferred myself back to Pomgen to complete my 2nd year residency, there wasn't accommodation for me but my best friends (the Late) Dr Regina Wangnapi and Del Mel offered me wardrobe and floor space in their little unit. They were 2 of the many sisters who were there for me when we lost Cynthia (27yrs old) to heart failure in September 2008. A year post surgery, it left me so broken. 💔❤ I lost my way back then but today I can truly say that God exists. Only through Him was I able to overcome the many trials that came my way even when my faith faltered. The triumphs were possible through Him our Mighty God.

I was blessed with two sons but my heart valve narrowed over the years that by 2021, I became more symptomatic and nearly collapsed by my patient's bedside during an oncall. That year I had to complete my research project and sit my Masters exam. God got me through and I graduated with my Masters in Child Health in 2022. I was started on medications and learned how to better manage my symptoms while awaiting a valve replacement surgery. I have my good and bad days but I have been able to continue work.

My family started a fundraising drive and through the many hearts that reached out, Professor Ferguson is one that is currently organising a referral to Australia for a valve replacement surgery that was quoted at K172, 000. Individual contributions and donations alone have raised up to K80,000. That to me is amazing and is God's hand at work. I am humbled and I am blessed and I know that He is not done. 🙏🏽♥️

Belated Christmas Greetings to everyone and we hope you had a wonderful start to this new year 2023. May God continue to bless your families.
An update to our progress. There is an opportunity for us to seek treatment in Australia however in applying for a visa I have had to undergo the full work up to rule out Tuberculosis due to my exposure to it. So my visa is pending the outcome of that for which I have to repeat a chest xray in March. A corporate dinner that was proposed for Dec 2022 had to be be cancelled and the family have decided to push on with smaller fundraisers, especially K100 dishes for now. This will be announced when they are ready. Thank you to all who continue to donate into the account and to those that have given your time, hearts and finances into this drive. We are hoping that with the proposed arrangement for treatment in Australia 50% of our set target may be sufficient to seek treatment while fundraising continues. In the mean time I am continuing my duties as a Paediatrician in Madang trusting in our God to lead and provide. I thank my family for their support always ♥️♥️♥️.
