Deputy Governor for Central and President of Aroma Coast Local Level Government Desmond Baira has called on the Department of Works and Highways to critically review the design of Imila Bridge in the A

This follows the collapsing of the bridge over the weekend.

In a statement Mr Baira says he wants a robust approach to reconstruction of the bridge.

He says the Department must secure the necessary funding and engage reputable, high-performing contractors, such as Global Construction, to ensure this bridge is built to last.

Global Construction Company was engaged to build a temporary road access allowing the flow of traffic.

The Deputy Governor visited the site of the collapsed bridge to conduct an assessment on the impact of the bridge’s failure.

Despite road works the Deputy noted systemic lack of maintenance on several critical bridges along the Magi Highway.

This bridges included More, Bilipo, Upulima, Lako (Boredoa), Orman, Inuma, Ibunatou, Kemp Welch bridges.

He stressed the country has just surpassed its 50th Anniversary and undertaken a national 'reset’ and as it looks toward the next 50 years, our transport sector must be transformed.

The Deputy Governor is now demanding for double-lane bridges on these crossings to reflect the needs of a growing province.

HOMEBREW PRODUCING IMPLEMENTS SURRENDERED TO POLICE IN KAIRUKU LLG.

MEDIA STATEMENT

The recently launched community watch program in Hisiu Village of Kairuku LLG in the Kairuku District of Central Province has seen some positive results, with the leaders conducting awareness in the village that resulted in the surrender of homebrew producing implements.

Central Provincial Police Commander Chief Inspector Joseph Salle confirmed that the village leaders and the community watch volunteers, after the launch, conducted awareness in the village, advising relatives of those known to be producing homebrew to surrender their equipment or they would be charged accordingly. He stated that after several awareness campaigns, many people had changed their behavior in the village, and those who were identified as producing homebrew surrendered their brewing implements to the leaders.

"I am pleased with the results so far because homebrew is one of the most consumed alcoholic beverages by youths in the village, who later create problems that lead to serious crimes. So far, the Central Province has been quiet during the festive season. We are looking forward to celebrating the new year peacefully. It is up to each individual to behave orderly, so we will see a peaceful new year celebration. I also want to thank the police officers in Central Province for their tireless efforts that have resulted in positive outcomes during the Christmas period. Crimes committed during the Christmas period were noted, and the police will investigate them," PPC Salle said.

He further added that police along Maggi Highway are also monitoring the areas where Imal Bridge collapsed in the Kupiano police operation area.

ROAD CURVES IN ALONG HIRITANO HIGHWAY: EMERGENCY WORKS UNDERWAY

-Statement/ Office of Member for Kairuku and Minister for Energy-

A section of the Hiritano Highway in Central Province has been washed away by floods from the recent heavy downpours leaving travelers and nearby communities stranded on both sides of the highway.

Dekenai Constructions is currently on site at Tubu in the Nara area of Kairuku District to build a bypass around the damage road for the traveling public while mobilising resources to repair the road that collapsed caused by continuous water-flow beneath.

A major washout along the Hiritano Highway at Tubu in the Nara area has cut off traffic since 1am on Sunday, 23rd November, leaving travellers and nearby communities stranded. The damaged section is located about 83 kilometres from Port Moresby.

Central Province Works Manager, Mr. Edwin Talapia, arrived on site at around 4pm Sunday to conduct an initial inspection and assess the extent of the damage. Upon confirming the severity of the washout, he immediately alerted Dekenai Construction, the contractor responsible for the highway maintenance. Dekenai is now mobilising 1.3 cubic metres of materials to begin urgent back-filling and reconstruction work on the affected section.

Mr. Talapia said the Works Department is treating the situation as a priority and assured the public that restoration efforts have already commenced.

“We are working around the clock. If the weather holds, we expect the road to be reopened by Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning,” he stated.

The washout has temporarily severed the main link for commuters and cargo travelling between Port Moresby, Kairuku, Goilala, Gulf, and Kerema. Authorities have advised road users to remain patient and exercise caution as work progresses.

MINISTER ISOAIMO CALLS FOR URGENT ATTENTION TO HIRITANO HIGHWAY DAMAGE

-Statement-

Minister for Energy and Member for Kairuku, Hon. Peter Namea Isoaimo, has issued an urgent call to the Ministry of Works to immediately intervene in a major road emergency along the Hiritano Highway at Tubu in the Nara area of Kairuku District.

The Minister said the situation is now critical, with the damaged section posing an imminent risk of cutting off the people of Kerema, Kairuku, and Goilala from essential travel, trade, and services.

Minister Isoaimo appealed directly to Minister for Works, Hon. Solon Mirisin, urging him to instruct Secretary Gibson Holemba, Central Province Works Manager Edwin Talapia and relevant technical teams to immediately assess and respond to the situation on the ground.

“This is an emergency. Our people will now be completely cut off if Works does not intervene quickly,” Minister Isoaimo stressed, adding that continuous rainfall has worsened the deterioration of the affected road segment.

He said restoring accessibility on this vital national highway is crucial to avoid disruptions in the movement of goods, government services, and emergency response operations.

The Minister also called for a coordinated approach involving provincial and district authorities to ensure swift mobilisation of machinery and resources.

“We must act now to prevent a total shutdown of the route. The lives and livelihoods of thousands depend on it,” he said.

Further updates are expected once the Works Department dispatches its assessment team.

NCD/CENTRAL RESIDENTS TO TAKE NOTE OF THE WEATHER AND MOVE AROUND WITH SAFETY MEASURES.

Media statement.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Benjamin Turi has issued a warning to the residents of the National Capital District and Central Province to observe and take note of the wet weather in and around Port Moresby and Central Province. ACP Turi, who noted from police situation reports that low areas around the command are flooding, is calling on the people to avoid getting into trouble with their cars breaking down in locations where police cannot respond quickly.

"City residents and those traveling on the highway must also take note of the buses and the vehicles they are traveling in because the vehicles might face mechanical faults, and innocent passengers can become victims of criminal activities. I am issuing this safety warning because we have received reports of vehicles facing faults at locations where police are not close," Turi said.

He further added that it is best for all to remain indoors and, in case of emergencies, to find and travel to locations that are not flooding. He also mentioned that prevention is better than regretting later.

Commander Turi also thanked his police officers who are working hard to ensure there is peace in the community.

He also added that drivers must not speed because speeding has caused a lot of accidents.
