[04/06/20]   CDC now recommends wearing of facial masks in public. Wearing facial masks prevents transmission of COVID-19 in public places. When taking facial masks off, avoid touching eyes, face and mouth. Wash hands with soap and water immediately. Or 70% alcohol hand sanitizer. Avoid touching the inside of the facial masks that comes in contact with the face.

Social distancing prevents COVID-19 transmission and helps control the spread.

Telepathology Unit Set up in Pohnpei State Hospital for cancer diagnosis, Federated States of Micronesia. This unit enables a Professor based in Japan to remotely access the computer in real time to see the biopsy image and tell us if the biopsy is cancer or not. Similar units can be established within PNG Provincial Hospitals for faster Cancer Diagnosis. The biopsy result turn-around time in PNG can be as long as 6 months. Quicker diagnosis and shorter result turn around time will mean earlier commencement of cancer treatment. Telepathology is one solution.

TB of the gland is very common in PNG. I found from my research at PMGH that place of residence does not matter in Port Moresby. Regardless of where you live, you are still at risk of contracting TB. You can see this clearly from my analysis (picture). KEY MESSAGE: TB in Port Moresby is very common. Place of residence does not protect you getting infected with the TB germ if you are a Port Moresby resident.

[08/23/18]   I have had several requests from friends regarding the Polio vaccination. So here is the current recommendation: Oral Polio vaccination is for children under 5 years of age. Children above 5 years of age can get a boster dose of the oral or injection vaccine. For addults, if an adult has been vaccinated as a child, they need only the one boster dose (injection). In adults who have not been vaccinated you need full coverage of the 3 doses of the injection polio vaccine. For travellers coming into PNG from countries where polio has been eradicated, you need a boster dose injection (one off injection). PNG adults going overseas, you need a single injection boster dose. Adults who do not know if you have been vaccinated or not, a boster dose is all you require if you are from a country where polio has been eradicated. However, a full 3 dose (injection) can also be given in these adults. Referenced from WHO and CDC.

BETEL NUT CAN CAUSE HEART ATTACKS | Pacific Islands Report

I did this study as a 3rd year medical student. Much of what we know about betel nut chewing and sudden death in PNG came from my research that was conducted at the Sir Buri Kidu Heart Institute under the watchful eyes of Sir Professor Isi Kevau. He was my research supervisor.

[03/09/18]   Fever is one of the most common reason for consulting a doctor. And it can be distressing for parents when their child is having high body temperature. The common causes of fever can be easily identified by the time of onset - acute fevers (within 7 days) or chronic fevers (going on for more than 7 days). The common causes of acute fever in children are: throat infections, ear infections, common cold (flu), skin infections (leg and toes especially) and urinary tract infections. Think of these things when you go see your doctor or healthcare professioonal.

[01/28/18]   Healthy life begins with healthy choices. You are what you eat as the common saying goes. But being healthy (body and mind) also is determined by what you do, what you read, what you watch, who you hang out with and where you live.
