The Management of National Capital District Provincial Health Authority (NCDPHA), in partnership with health professionals, civil society, and international partners, is proud to join the global community in commemorating World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week, observed from 18 to 24 November 2025. This year’s theme, “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future,” underscores the urgent need for collective action to combat the growing threat of drug-resistant infections.

Antimicrobial resistance occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve to resist the medicines designed to kill them. In PNG, where access to second-line treatments is limited and infectious diseases remain a leading cause of illness, AMR poses a serious public health risk.

Metoreia Urban Health Centre Launches Eye Clinic Services

Port Moresby, 13th of March 2025 – The National Capital District Provincial Health Authority (NCDPHA) continues to provide essential health services through its network of clinics in the National Capital District (NCD). The Metoreia Urban Health Centre (MCH) is proud to announce the opening of its new eye clinic, made possible through a partnership with Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) and the Fred Hollows Foundation New Zealand (FHFNZ). This new facility will serve as an outpost for a variety of minor eye care services.

The National Department of Health (NDoH) and the Fred Hollows Foundation Papua New Guinea (FHF PNG), a local affiliate of FHFNZ, have worked together to improve eye care in Papua New Guinea, with a shared goal of reducing avoidable blindness and visual impairment in the country since 2002.

A key milestone in this collaboration was the donation of a slit lamp to the Metoreia Health Centre by Dr. John Szetu, Medical Director of FHFNZ, Country Manager Priscilla Sine Mal, and Program Officer Alyanna Tugum Kolma. The slit lamp will enhance the eye care services available at the facility. Dr. Michael Dokup, Director for Curative Health, and Regina Wuri, Clinic Manager of Metoreia Health Extension Officer (HEO), received the donation. Additionally, an eye specialist from PMGH will visit the Metoreia clinic weekly to provide ongoing eye care services.

The senior management team of NCDPHA extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Fred Hollows Foundation for their generous donation of the slit lamp. The hospital management and staff are committed to working closely with patients to ensure the best possible care is provided at the new eye clinic.
Acting CEO Dr. Robin Oge also expressed his appreciation to all partners who contributed to the establishment of this important clinic. “NCDPHA will continue to collaborate with PMGH, FHF, and NDoH to ensure the ongoing success and sustainability of this vital service,” Dr. Oge said.
