Here’s my two cents on the issue of requiring COGS (Certificate of Good Standing) as part of the PRC license renewal requirements for pharmacists.

While this requirement is mandated by law, pero parang hindi nito isinasaalang-alang ang current situation ng mga pharmacist sa Pilipinas.

Marami sa ating mga pharmacist ang humaharap na sa heavy workloads, challenging working conditions, mababang pasahod, at mga gastusin, kaya naman nagiging mas mahirap mag-comply with additional administrative requirements tulad ng COGS. Bukod dito, the accessibility and AFFORDABILITY of professional development opportunities—often tied to COGS issuance—vary across different practice settings, lalo na para sa mga nasa community at independent pharmacies.

Over the years, the number of requirements just to renew our professional license keeps increasing, yet there are no concrete efforts to ensure that pharmacists in the Philippines receive fair and LIVABLE wages.

Also, bakit sa ibang propesyon, hindi ito requirement para sa license renewal? Ano ang pinagkaiba ng pharmacy profession sa iba na kailangan pang dumaan sa ganitong proseso? Kung mandated ito ng batas, hindi ba natin pwedeng amyendahan ito? Hindi ba pwedeng gawing mas simple, mas patas, at mas makatarungan ang sistema para sa mga pharmacist?

Dapat magkaroon ng open dialogue sa pagitan ng mga pharmacist, PPhA, regulatory bodies, at iba pang stakeholders para makahanap ng mas maayos at patas na paraan. It is time to reevaluate whether this requirement remains necessary or if it has become an unnecessary burden on pharmacists who are already dealing with so many challenges.

Policies should be designed to uphold professional standards while also acknowledging the practical challenges of the pharmacy workforce.

The Cosmetics, Health and Wellness (COSHWELL) Pharmacists Association, Inc. in partnership with the University of the Philippines College of Pharmacy would like to congratulate the top 3 winners of the recently concluded World Pharmacists’ Day poster-making contest for the awareness campaign themed “Pharmacy Strengthening Health Systems Focusing on Health and Wellness”.

The Top 3 winners are:

Coshwell Pharmacists in its joint effort with Health Science Consultancy and Research Center, Inc. - HSCRC and in collaboration with Philippine Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, Inc. Pacop Phil successfully piloted a 2-day Cosmetics Pharmacy webinar on “Trends and Regulatory Update on Cosmetic Product Development last 27 and 28 July 2022 via Zoom. The webinar was very well attended by more than 120 partners from the academe of the different Pharmacy schools nationwide.

This collaboration between the two affiliates of the Philippine Pharmacists Association (PPhA), Coshwell Pharmacists and PACOP is spearheaded by its respective Presidents Catherine Clare Rivera and Dean Dr. Maria Fay Neneth Cariaga with the initiative of COSHWELL’s Vice President and PACOP’s former President Dr. Imelda Peña. Cosmetic Industry resource speakers during the webinar were Ms Catherine Clare Rivera and Ms Sarah Binsol.

It was touted to be the first of a series in preparation for the timely integration of cosmetic product development course into the B.S. Pharmacy curriculum nationwide. This alliance with PACOP aims to standardize the quality of the teaching methods and content in cosmetics which will be in sync with the current industry methods and practices. With the industry expertise from Coshwell Pharmacists, the partnership’s goal also is to be able to share this faculty development techniques and trends not just with PACOP members but to the non-members as well. Let’s look forward to the future announcement on the next level on Cosmetic Pharmacy Training Program for cosmetic product development courses and its integration in the BS Pharmacy curriculum of the different colleges of pharmacy.

“Shaping the Future of Self-Care Through Pharmacy – Appropriate Management in the Choice of Medicines for Self-Care.”

In this covid-19 pandemic times, harnessing and upgrading our patient counselling skills as agents promoting health and wellness through self-care in our daily lives is second nature to us as pharmacists. Coshwell Pharmacists is always in support and in the lookout for wellness and self-care endeavors to find learning events that will contribute to our forward directions to better wellness and self-care.

The recent international online learning event of the International Federation of Pharmacy (FIP) entitled, “Shaping the Future of Self Care Through Pharmacy: Appropriate Management in the Choice of Medicines for Self-Care,” held last June 2, 2021 was attended by our Coshwell President Catherine Clare Rivera and Coshwell Pharmacists members. The online event was facilitated by our very own PPhA past President Ma’am Leonila Ocampo joined by expert international pharmacist panelists from Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Australia and Canada. It was an insightful eye opener on the current directions of global community pharmacy practices in Self-Care across the world that we can adopt in the Philippines. It is also a positive affirmation of PPhA and Coshwell Pharmacists’ endeavor towards supporting aligning our Wellness and Self Care Advocacy practices to provide quality and at-par world class services of our pharmacists to our community.
