Time travel: A message to my younger self

I want to take you by the hand and show you the many different perspectives life has to offer—the perspective of someone who understands that real winners aren't those who never stumble, but those who rise every time they fall. Failure is not the enemy; it’s simply a teacher, a guide that helps us learn and grow. It doesn’t define us unless we allow it to. Instead, failure can be the stepping stone that leads us toward becoming the strongest, most authentic versions of ourselves. I want you to understand that every single mistake you make is a lesson in disguise, teaching you more about who you are, what you truly want, and the incredible strength you possess to overcome anything.
I want you to know that all the struggles you’re facing are not signs of defeat; they are signs of change. They are your opportunity to reshape your mindset, to alter the course of your life. The challenges you face are not there to break you—they are there to push you into realizing your true potential. You have the power to change your circumstances, and most importantly, you have the ability to develop the discernment to make better choices as you move forward. Every obstacle, every hardship, every setback is just a part of the process, and it’s not something to fear. Instead of avoiding them, face them head-on with courage and integrity.
You may be telling me now that I don’t fully understand the weight of what you’re going through. You might feel that no one could possibly understand the depth of your struggles. But trust me, I feel it too. I know it’s hard, and I know you might want to quit. But I want to tell you this: this is just a chapter in your life. You’re not stuck here forever, and you won’t be in this moment of pain for long. The world will continue to challenge you, and with every challenge, there will be even more growth. If you choose to run away from them, the cycle will continue. But if you stand tall, face them with all your might, you will transform. Life will never stop throwing challenges your way, but each time you rise to meet them, you will be stronger, wiser, and more prepared for the next.
It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. It’s okay to feel lost. But never forget your worth, and always keep moving forward, because this journey is about growth, and you’re on the path to becoming someone incredible.

The second law in The 48 Laws of Power says, "Never Put Too Much Trust in Friends, Learn How to Use Enemies." This means that trusting friends too much can backfire because they might get jealous or resentful and end up betraying you. On the other hand, if you handle your enemies wisely, they can actually be more dependable and motivated to show their worth.

Ben had always believed in the power of friendship. He and Liam had been good friends since they were at school days. When they graduated, Ben learned that Liam had gone abroad for a job to support his family and a year later, Liam returned to their town battling the suspicion of tumor, Ben’s heart swelled with compassion. He was determined to help his friend regain his footing.

With a stable position as Mr. Zuri's right-hand man, Ben leveraged his influence to secure Liam a job at the company. It felt good to be there for someone who had been by his side for so long. They became best friends and business partners, and Ben poured everything into their venture—his time, resources, and unwavering support. He helped Liam to reach his dreams and even prioritized Liam over himself.

But when life challenged Ben, everything changed. Mr. Freeman fired Ben and charges were brought against him, and when he turned to Liam for support—it smashed him to find that his best friend had vanished into thin air. Instead of standing by him in this dark hour, Liam distanced himself from Ben's plight, claiming he was on good terms with Freeman while simultaneously bad-mouthing Ben to protect himself.

The betrayal cut deep; it was not just a loss of friendship but an awakening to reality. In that moment of despair, Ben realized that he had placed too much trust in someone who had never truly been a friend. The very person he thought would stand by him had conspired against him in silence. Liam became ally and loyal to Freeman.

As he sat alone in the aftermath of betrayal, reflecting on everything that had transpired, Ben understood the essence of Law 2 from Robert Greene's "The 48 Laws of Power": "Never Put Too Much Trust in Friends; Learn How to Use Enemies." Friends can become envious or resentful; they can turn against you when you least expect it. Enemies can be more reliable if managed correctly—they have something to prove.

Ben learned that true loyalty is often found where one least expects it; sometimes those labeled as enemies can become your greatest allies if approached strategically, just like Liam to Freeman. With this newfound wisdom, he resolved not only to rebuild himself but also to approach future relationships with caution and discernment.

We're going to take all the lessons from "The 48 Laws of Power" by Robert Greene and turn them into a story. We'll follow the same character throughout, making it easy to see how each lesson plays out in their life.

Law 1: "Never Outshine the Master"

Ben was a dedicated employee who always had Mr. Zuri's back. He admired his boss and thought highly of his integrity, making sure to credit him for any team successes. In return, Ben earned Mr. Zuri’s trust and became his right-hand man.

However, trouble was brewing in the form of Mr. Freeman, a cunning director who envied Zuri's success and wanted to take him down a peg or two. Freeman tried to sway Ben and other employees into turning against Zuri, but Ben wasn't falling for it. Instead of being tempted by Freeman’s schemes, he reported everything back to Zuri, proving that he had his boss's back.

Freeman wasn’t about to let Ben’s loyalty interfere with his plans. With some whispers in the right ears—namely President Morhon’s—he managed to orchestrate Zuri's downfall and retirement under false accusations. The fallout didn’t stop there; Jackas twisted the narrative around Ben too and had him fired for standing by Zuri.

In this situation, Law 1 from Robert Greene's "48 Laws of Power" played out perfectly: by never outshining his master, Ben initially benefited from being trusted and valued as Zuri's right-hand man. However, Freeman’s envy led to both their downfalls when he used his influence to eliminate them both from the picture.

Ben learned a hard lesson about loyalty and power dynamics in the workplace: sometimes being too loyal can make you a target when envy is lurking nearby.
