Is your blood pressure in the healthy range?
Blood pressure tells us how hard your heart is working and how healthy your arteries are. Knowing your numbers can help prevent serious problems like stroke, heart attack, and kidney damage.
Check your category:
• Normal: Less than 120/80
• Elevated: 120–129 / less than 80
• Stage 1 Hypertension: 130–139 or 80–89
• Stage 2 Hypertension: 140 or higher, or 90 or higher
• Severe Hypertension: Higher than 180 and/or higher than 120 (no symptoms) — call your doctor
• Hypertensive Emergency: Higher than 180 and/or higher than 120 with symptoms — seek emergency care immediately
Symptoms to watch for: chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness, weakness, vision changes, or difficulty speaking.
Take your blood pressure regularly. If your numbers are high, see your doctor for advice on management and treatment.
Get your blood pressure checked at least once a year and understand what the numbers mean. Severe high blood pressure combined with symptoms such as chest pain or trouble speaking may be a hypertensive emergency, according to the new high blood pressure guideline, and you should call 911 immediately.
