Stress Debriefing Through Expressive Arts for Healthcare Workers
By: Keisha Charisse O. Digon, Psychologist, Mental Health Unit

In observance of World Mental Health Day, the CLMMRH-Mental Health Unit conducted a reflective and interactive session titled “Stress Debriefing Through Expressive Arts” on October 10, 2025, at Reodica Hall.
Facilitated by Dr. April Rose B. Hechanova-Espinosa, Head of the Mental Health Unit, the activity gathered hospital personnel from various divisions for an afternoon of creative expression and meaningful connection.

The session featured a series of engaging activities designed to release physical tension, enhance body awareness, and encourage self-reflection. Building on this renewed sense of presence, participants expressed aspects of self-awareness through individual artworks, which they later combined in groups to form a collective piece—an inspiring reflection of connection, collaboration, and resilience among healthcare workers.

Dr. Espinosa explained that the activity aimed to help participants process stress and nurture emotional well-being amid the daily demands of hospital work. She emphasized that expressive arts offer a gentle yet powerful way to release emotions, strengthen team cohesion, and remind healthcare staff of the importance of caring for themselves as they care for others.

The session concluded with heartfelt sharing and a collective sense of lightness and unity, reinforcing CLMMRH’s ongoing commitment to promoting holistic well-being among its personnel.

When your thoughts start to overwhelm you — try to become more focused at the moment.
Mindfulness isn’t about stopping your thoughts, but gently guiding them back to the present.
This Mental Health Week, let’s practice the art of redirection by becoming more intentional in guiding our thoughts.

This Mental Health Day, the Mental Health Unit – CLMMRH reaffirms its commitment to delivering community-based mental health services, strengthening Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) during crises, and conducting trainings to empower frontline health workers in recognizing and managing mental health conditions at the community level to promote a more accessible and responsive workforce for its clientele.

Through these efforts, we strive to bring mental health care closer to the people, especially in vulnerable and disaster-affected communities. In times of uncertainty, let’s work together to make mental health support available for all.

Taking care of your mental health doesn't have to be complicated. Small, consistent habits like nourishing your body, moving regularly, getting enough rest and proper nutrition, practicing mindfulness, and connecting with nature and others can make a big difference in your overall well-being.

Empathy is a multidimensional phenomenon involving the ability to perceive, share, and understand the emotional states of others—combining affective (feeling with others) and cognitive (taking their perspective) processes (Stevens and Taber, 2021).

Empathy is about listening without judgment and standing with someone in their pain. When we choose empathy, we turn compassion into strength and silence into safety. This Mental Health Week, let’s lead with empathy—because one genuine moment of understanding can change a life.

SAFE SPACES, STRONGER TEAMS: Healthcare Workers Unite Against Su***de

By: Yanglee Dela Fuente-Magallanes, Psychologist, Mental Health Unit

The CLMMRH - Mental Health Unit held “SAFE SPACES, STRONGER TEAMS: Healthcare Workers Unite Against Su***de” on September 11, 2025, with the participation of selected CLMMRH personnel from all departments.

With the guidance of Dr. Charibel Escandelor, psychiatrist and advocate of su***de prevention, the activity shed light on strengthening referral pathways and fostering a culture of openness in addressing and promoting the destigmatization of su***de. She further emphasized how we can move from silence and stigma toward openness, understanding, and fostering hope.

The half-day program featured powerful testimonies that challenged misconceptions and gave voice to real experiences of loss and resilience. It concluded with a pledge of allegiance and commitment, as healthcare workers stood together to change the narrative on su***de: from despair to compassion, from isolation to connection, and from hopelessness to healing-creating safe spaces where every life is valued.

In times where you feel overwhelmed, grounding yourself through your senses can bring calmness and clarity. It interrupts intrusive thoughts and helps you to stay connected in the present moment. With this, you can create space with intention rather than react to distress and a powerful way to stay centered and safe.

Healing begins with us.

In the rush of caring for others, we sometimes forget to care for ourselves. Healing for Healers is our gentle reminder that your well-being matters too.

To every healthcare worker who showed up not just in presence but in heart—thank you. May you always find the strength to pause, reflect, and heal.
