LEPTOSPIROSIS is a zoonotic bacterial infection caused by Leptospira species. It spreads through direct contact with urine from infected animals (commonly rodents (RATS), dogs, livestock) or indirectly via contaminated water, soil, or food.
Entry occurs through broken skin or mucous membranes (eyes, mouth, nose).
Key Features:
Incubation: 5–14 days
Symptoms (biphasic illness):
Mild: Fever, chills, headache, muscle pain (especially calves/lower back), red eyes
Severe (Weil’s disease): Jaundice, kidney failure, bleeding, meningitis, respiratory distress
Prevention:
Avoid floodwaters or stagnant water
Wear protective gear
Control rodents
Vaccinate pets/livestock where applicable
