A heart attack occurs when a blocked artery prevents blood from reaching a section of your heart. The blocked artery needs to be reopened quickly, or the heart nourished by that artery begins to die. The longer a person goes without treatment, the greater the damage.
Heart attack symptoms can be immediate and can be intense. Symptoms can also start slowly and can persist for hours, days, or weeks before a heart attack. Heart attack symptoms in women can be different from those in men.
Heart Attack Symptoms in Men
โข Most heart attacks involve uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, or pain in the center of the chest that can last for minutes. This discomfort can come and go.
โข Upper body pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
โข Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.
โข Other signs can include a cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness.
Heart Attack Symptoms in Women
โข Women can experience the same symptoms as men.
โข Womenโs most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. They are more likely to experience shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, and back or jaw pain.

Cardiac arrest occurs suddenly and often without warning. It is an abrupt loss of heart function. It may be caused by an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). A common arrhythmia associated with cardiac arrest is ventricular fibrillation. Ventricular fibrillation is when the heartโs lower chambers suddenly start beating chaotically and donโt pump blood to the brain, lungs, and other organs. Seconds later, a person loses consciousness and has no pulse.
Cardiac arrest may be reversed if CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is performed and a defibrillator is used to shock the heart and restore a normal heart rhythm within a few minutes. Death can result quickly if proper steps arenโt taken immediately. More than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of a hospital each year in the United States.
A heart attack or cardiac arrest is a life-threatening emergency. If you or a loved one is experiencing any of the above symptoms, call 911 immediately.
The City Health Services Office (CHSO) led by Dr. Celia Flor Brillantes calls on all citizens to get their annual check-up at the closest District Health Center to them as early as January. This will help prevent such deadly diseases through early detection, proper medication, and lifestyle changes as recommended by the medical officer.
