Sagan Friant, an anthropologist from the USA, said that Monkeypox virus originated from rodents. However, it was first discovered in monkeys in 1958 in a laboratory setting in Denmark. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Mpox is an illness caused by a monkeypox virus, a species of the genus Orthopoxvirus. The first reported human case of mpox was a nine-month-old boy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (1970). In May 2022, an outbreak of mpox suddenly appeared and rapidly spread in different countries around the world. In addition to that, from January 2022- August 2024, over 120 countries have reported over 100,000 laboratory confirmed cases and over 220 deaths among those.
It was said that the virus primarily (but not only) affected gay, bisexual and other men who had intercoursed with the same gender as it was transmitted through such things. Healthcare workers also have a high risk in acquiring the virus. Moreover, people can also acquire the virus from contaminated objects such as clothes and needles. Pregnant women who have mpox may transmit the virus to the baby which can cause death of the baby or complications for the parent. It can also be transmitted from bites or scratches from infected animals to humans.
Mpox signs and symptoms usually begin within a week but can start 1-21 days after exposure that lasts 2-4 weeks and may last longer for patients with weak immune systems. Common symptoms of mpox are: rashes, fever, sore throat, headache, muscle and back pains and low energy.
As of August 2024, there is still no proven effective antiviral treatment for Mpox but we can manage some symptoms through medications and vaccines provided by different hospital institutions.
