When was the last time you listened to a nutrition story told by someone?

As a Nutritionist-Dietitian, I’m often the one speaking. But during my last event for the 51st Nutrition Month celebration last July 30, I had the chance to sit back and listen, this time, as a judge.

This year’s Best Nutri-Story Teller Contest focused on overnutrition, a growing concern we sometimes overlook.

See different entries here: https://www.facebook.com/valenciacnc

The stories were simple, but true.
One ate too much, another avoided healthy foods, and one learned why our food choices matter.

Often, these stories reflect real-life habits which many kids don’t know what a balanced meal looks like.
Sometimes they eat too much of one thing, or not enough of the others. But with awareness and care, overnutrition can be prevented.

Thank you so much, Valencia City Nutrition Committee for having me and for the meaningful Nutrition Month celebration! 💚

Happy 51st National Nutrition Month!

Last July 15, 2025, I was invited to speak at IBA College of Mindanao Inc. for their Nutrition Month celebration.

I shared one clear message with the students, teachers, and staff:

1. Food and nutrition are human rights
2. Working together is important
3. We all have a role to play

This year’s theme says it all:
“Food at Nutrition Security, Maging Priotity! Sapat na Pagkain, Karapatan Natin!”

Thank you, IBA College of Mindanao Inc. for the warm welcome. 💚

Happy 51st National Nutrition Month! 🇵🇭🥝🥑

This July, the DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) joins the nation in celebrating the 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵!

This year’s theme, “Sa PPAN: Sama-sama sa Nutrisyong Sapat Para sa Lahat” and sub-theme “Food and Nutrition Security, Maging Priority, Sapat na Pagkain, Karapatan Natin”, calls for collective action toward ensuring adequate nutrition for all. The DOST-FNRI contributes to this celebration by highlighting “Food Security for a Well-Nourished Country” as the theme of its 51st DOST-FNRI Seminar Series.

With this shared vision, we emphasize the vital role of science, research, and innovation in making nutritious food and demand-driven services accessible and affordable to stakeholders.

Thus, the FNRI continues to promote practical and science-based guidance through the 2012 Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF), which enjoins us to:

• Eat a variety of foods every day to get the nutrients needed by the body.
• Breastfeed infants exclusively from birth up to six months and continue with appropriate complementary feeding for two years and beyond.
• Eat more vegetables and fruits to get essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
• Consume fish, lean meat, poultry, eggs, dried beans, or nuts daily for growth and repair.
• Include milk, milk products, and other calcium-rich foods such as small fish and shellfish for healthy bones and teeth.
• Consume safe food and water to prevent food- and water-borne diseases.
• Use iodized salt to prevent iodine deficiency.
• Limit intake of salty, fried, fatty, and sugar-rich foods to avoid cardiovascular diseases.
• Maintain a normal body weight through proper diet and regular physical activity.
• Be physically active, make healthy food choices, manage stress, avoid alcohol, and do not smoke to prevent lifestyle-related diseases.

Building on these basic nutrition concepts, we remain steadfast in our journey to make proper nutrition more attainable, in pursuit of a well-nourished nation.

Together, let us build a future where every family is nourished and every table is filled with safe, affordable, and nutritious meals.

STATEMENT OF THE PROFESSIONAL REGULATORY BOARD OF NUTRITION AND DIETETICS ON THE ONLINE OFFERING OF SHORT-TERM NUTRITION COURSE

It was brought to the attention of the Professional Regulatory board of Nutrition and Dietetics (BoND) that there are several Nutrition course offerings which are being advertised in social media channels such as Facebook. These short-term online courses are being offered and made available to anyone through online platforms under flexible learning schedules and arrangements. Those who have completed the online courses are eligible to become accredited or certified “Nutritionists”.

In the Philippines, Nutrition and Dietetics is recognized as a regulated profession by virtue of Republic Act (RA) No. 10862, otherwise known as the “Nutrition and Dietetics Law of 2016”. In order to lawfully practice the profession in the country, one must be registered and licensed as a Nutritionist-Dietitian by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) and the BoND. Meanwhile, the academic requirement for licensure is the completion of the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics which is a four-year degree program regulated by the Commission in Higher Education (CHED).

The BoND wishes to inform the public that the conferment of the professional title “Nutritionist” is subject to full compliance with the licensing requirements of RA No. 10862. These include completing the BS in Nutrition and Dietetics and passing the Licensure Examination for Nutritionist and Dietitians given by the PRC and the BoND. Mere completion of a short-term nutrition course is not enough to lawfully confer the “Nutritionist” title or status, let alone, without the corresponding license as “Nutritionist-Dietitian”. To reiterate, the use of the title “Nutritionist-Dietitian” without the requisite license from the PRC and the BoND is punishable under the law.

The Board hereby urge the public to be more circumspect in availing these kinds of course offerings. While the BoND supports the need to raise public awareness on nutrition thru online course offerings, the conduct of such activities must, at all times, be consistent with the applicable legal prescriptions and regulations, particularly on the conferment and use of professional titles.

For further information on this, the BoND may be reached through telephone number or e-mail address: prb_nutridiet@prc.gov.ph.

End.

"Part of being a dietitian is helping people feel at home with food again"

Personally, i don't just talk about nutrients and portions. I listen and reassure.

Because sometimes, they just need a dietitian who will say "its okay to add more rice" or "its okay to enjoy your favorite nuts".

Thank you for reminding us, Karyne Simon, RND! 💚

No one really told me this growing up:

You can’t call yourself fit if you’re all about physical activities but ignore what you eat.

And I’m glad I got to speak about that in front of the Bachelor of Physical Education (BPED) students at CMU recently.

Because they’ll be teaching students every day.

Not just how to move, but how to take care of their bodies.

And you can’t teach that well if you don’t understand how food affects energy, focus, mood – even motivation.

So I shared a few basics:
✔️ Pinggang Pinoy
✔️ Common eating struggles in college
✔️ How PE teachers can promote proper nutrition
✔️ How to read food labels

These are just simple topics, yes.
But I saw heads nodding.
I saw hands raised.
And I knew they were listening.

I came to teach about nutrition.
But I left feeling inspired.

This talk reminded me why I do what I do.
