Posting for positivity and awareness

An update on our patient diagnosed with breast cancer:

Given her breast cancer type and stage, and after a multidisciplinary team discussion, Dr. Angeli Dimaano recommended a neoadjuvant approach (meaning chemo before surgery). The patient completed her treatment cycles and from an initial stage IIIA cancer, we were able to downstage her cancer to stage I before breast surgery.

Dr. Miguel Dimaano then did a Modified Radical Mastectomy- an operation that removed her entire breast including the axillary lymph nodes last December 2024.

The final biopsy of her breast came out and showed that there were no cancer cells left - the best possible outcome after neoadjuvant treatment.

She will still undergo further adjuvant treatment (treatment after surgery) with radiation, targeted and hormonal therapy to complete her treatment regimen, followed by regular check-ups for surveillance and monitoring.

We are happy to share our first NEOADJUVANT CHEMOTHERAPY graduate. She came 7 months ago for a large right breast mass, approximately measuring 8x8cm with multiple enlarged axillary lymph nodes (lusay sa kili-kili). After biopsy and workup, she was diagnosed as a case of Breast cancer right stage IIIA. Based on her breast cancer subtype status and size of the mass, our team decided that the best course of action was to do neoadjuvant chemotherapy (meaning, chemo first before surgery). She then underwent 8 cycles of systemic chemo and targeted treatment. She will then undergo surgery of her breast.

Now, after almost 7 months of treatment, her breast cancer was downstaged to stage I, and the size of the mass is now 1.5x1.5cm! That's a >90% size reduction.

To add, the cost of her medications were mostly covered with various assistance programs with the help of MJ Santos.

We are sharing this to post awareness that we can fight cancer! Nowadays, we have multiple ways of cancer treatment and management based on latest medical evidence.

And of course, early detection and prevention is always better. So have yourself screened if you are a good candidate for screening. You can refer to our previous post on breast cancer screening guidelines.

Mahalaga ang early detection para sa lung cancer. Madalas na walang sintomas ang lung cancer hanggang sa advanced stage nito na maaring mas mahirap gamutin.

Early detection increases the chance of successful treatment and improves survival rates.
