The happiest day of my life. The day my first son was born. We named him Patrick, and he was the most beautiful little baby I have ever seen. That baby turned out to be a kind-hearted boy, and he became the most exciting thing to wake us up every day.
My wife Emelda and I devoted ourselves to being better people and being good parents because of our son. He truly became our sun and life. From a well-liked boy, he became a well-loved gentleman.
His kind heart told him to become a doctor, not for fame or wealth, but to be a man for others. To care for the sick and needy. His dream took him to the Ateneo Medical School, where he found his place and trained to be a surgeon.
Unfortunately, on February 11, 2017, in his 3rd year of medical school, we discovered he had a cancerous brain tumor. The doctors told us that Glioblastoma Multiforme does not allow a good outcome even after surgery. We hoped for the best, and so did Patrick.
He steeled up to his condition with a determination to fight, and he did so with so much grace and strength. I am so awed at how such a young man can have so much courage to face such a heavy challenge. He certainly showed me how to be a real man.
Even while going through Chemotherapy and radiation treatment, he still found the energy to help children with autism and Down syndrome, with the Heart at Play group out of the Sacred Heart parish in Kamuning. His last visit with them was in his own wheelchair, with the kids running up to him to play and calling Kuya Patrick. I am so proud of my son. We lost Patrick on May 17, 2017.
He was only 25. Grief is the price of love, and each day without my son reminds us of how deeply we love and miss him. I miss his laughter, his voice, his presence. I will always miss him, but I am forever grateful to God for the privilege of being his father.
He was and always will be my greatest purpose in life. Together with my daughter, Mia, and son, Grant.
Always missing you.
